A good practice or rule of thumb is to use a heavy blanket or mover's padding to cover the rear of the car EVERYTIME you install or remove the hard top.
Mechanics always use fender guards up front and this is a good idea for the back end. Even for seasoned pros there's a chance you can slip or lose your grip.

The movers blanket works well, I've used these in the past and they work well anytime your working on your car.
