I wanted to pick up some alpine speakers from best buy because the stock system just sucks...

is it worth it without an amp?? I listened to a friends civic and it was really nice with no amp just head unit.

I first replaced with Alpine 6-1/2 inch with tweeters. Only heard difference, when driving car with top on, at low speeds. IMHO, at highway speeds = no difference.

Had to get amp and subwoofer. Actually, the subwoofer made the most difference. I also replace OEM radio with Alpine unit.

Depends on the HU. Some have enough power to go without an amp. Some don't. I got one a couple of years ago that could fill the bill without needing an amp. Glad I did.
