Metra ASWC-1 and the S2000
 

Having reading different comments about the Metra ASWC-1 on the S2K forum and at the Metra website, I decided to email them about the function of the MUTE button on the S2000 and their product.
I received this response from their tech department this morning and hope this will help with clarifying the conflicting comments on either websites.

I’m actually the tech you spoke with first this morning, and Ben was the second tech you spoke with when you called back. I understand the forums have a wealth of information. This is great on so many levels. However, when people don’t know how these interfaces actually work, that’s when you’ll start to get wrong information.

Now the quote that was listed about having a dedicated Mute wire is correct. With that said, this is the reason the Yellow/Green (Pin 3) wire is used while wiring in the ASWC-1. This is almost solely used in GM vehicles and only used in a handful of other applications. This wire is dedicated to the Mute function and this function alone. Seeing the 12v pulse on/off/on with pin 3 and this wiring configuration is the trigger for the Mute function within the ASWC in this programming. This is why we say to double tap Mute on the wheel. If you look through Honda wiring for ASWC-1, you’ll notice this is the ONLY Honda that uses the Yellow/Green (Pin 3), and this is for this reason.

As for functionality within your Kenwood, that is something we can’t answer with a 100% certainty based on the values within your radio. We can say the ASWC-1 is receiving the proper value for the Mute function though. In regards to the JVC vs Kenwood question, you asked earlier. Although JVC & Kenwood are about the same, they do have different programming and SWC values between the radios. This is one of the reasons that they detect differences between brands. This is also the reason JVC doesn’t have Seek+ on some radios and Kenwood always does.

Onto wiring. This cannot be done without wiring to your vehicle. You will be forced to wire the ASWC-1 wires into your vehicle wiring. You will make 3 connections. I have included the instructions here below with the connections needed.

The tech does seem to know what he's talking about, and the fact that the instructions do in fact connect
the mute wire suggests that it'll work, though if you read their ASWC-1 wiring instructions 00-09 Honda S2000
they specfically say Note: The Mute button will no longer function so his dig about forums providing inaccurate
info is a little unwarranted.
My guess is they've made changes to the ASWC-1 without properly updating the instructions.

If for some reason your ASWC-1 is having trouble autodetecting your headunit, try flashing it using the firmware flasher.

I had gotten my setup to work OK, the volume up button worked minus everything else. I began programming using the notes, focused on trying to get mute to work and somehow got the unit confused. I was able to get it to reset, but the ASWC-1 then had SEVERE trouble auto-detecting my headunit. Tried resetting, grounding in different spots, before checking to see if I could force it some other way. No dice.

There is a USB based tool you can use, one you download some software. You can check to see if the firmware is out of date. You can do some other functions as well. Here is a link.

For me, this was a godsend. I was able to force the ASWC-1 to recognize my HeadUnit as a JVC. I didn't have to do any programming whatsoever afterwards, everything worked. I still don't have the mute button working, but everything else is on point. I can live with this.

I originally mixed some connections while putting the SWC controller in (DON"T use Quick Splices). I am not sure if this mix-up affected the auto-detect functionality or if it was something, but the software tool set it in the right spot. Give it a shot. Very helpful tool.

You mentioned don't use quick splices I tried that and the unit isn't detecting the wires. How did you wire in those wires to the harness without using taps?
