QUICK EASY Q - remote turn on lead
 

Just a quick Q regarding the best solution for the amp/HU remote turn on power.

which is the better option:

1) remote lead from headunit - spliced with a cable going to each amp

2) remote lead from headunit to amp1 and jumper to amp2

which one will be a better wiring solution or does it not matter at all?

Run the remote lead to a relay. The relay to wire barrier strip with jumper bar. Then wire each amp off the barrier strip.

Depending on what headunit you are using, my understanding is that most only give between .5-1 amp output, where as most amplifiers are looking for a .5 amp minimum signal. When I recently tried running a 2nd amplifier off my Clarion headunit, neither amp would then work since there wasn't enough power to give either the signal they were looking for.

I ran it to amp1 to amp2 to amp3 and then to another relay to control a fan in my trunk. They all work fine.

My system in the S only used one amp, but on my prior install, I ran one remote to the rear of the car, and then split it(spliced). Worked fine. A remote carries very little voltage. I doubt there is a difference between either way you described. Pick what you like and stick with it!

i would recommend putting an inline fuse in your remote lead wire...i had like two tiny little wire strands peak out over the remote lead and ground themselves....fried my damn HU. lesson learned here.

i've run 1 lead and spliced it for two amps and have also run 1 lead to a relay to power 2 amps and fans. in both cases, it worked just fine. best thing to do however is to see if you can find in the manual for the amps what their rated current draw is for the turn on lead, and find in the HU's manual what its rated supply current for the turn on lead is.

i just looked on the jl website in the owners manuals and couldnt find the info i need.

Yea, I don't see any info in both of the product manuals about the output either. Personally I'd use a relay like I said above, but you can always go the trial/error method of trying your direct wire route first. Worst case they don't turn on & you have to go the relay route.
