Those are BS however there are new electric superchargers that now can produce a few lbs of boost. They have been pretty popular with the BRZ/FRS crowd.

7whp for $1k. Doesn't sound too bad after you realize that an exhaust system/header/intake will cost almost $2k. For about the same gain.
