Default AEM EMS Questions

I'm currently finishing up gathering the parts for the S that aren't in a turbo kit so I can go FI sometime in the next month or so, the clutch/flywheel, exhaust, etc. I've gotten most things pinned down but no matter where I search I cannot find an answer to this question...I'm getting AEM EMS w/ UEGO without a doubt. I also know the AEM EMS is capable of electronic boost control. What I don't know is do you have to buy anything additional to make these features work? For instance to get an AFR readout do you have to buy a gauge to hook into the AEM EMS to display it or does the EMS w/ UEGO come with a gauge that you can mount? And on the electronic boost control does the EMS come with a boost solenoid in order to control the boost? If not where would you get one? I haven't been able to track down where I can get just a boost solenoid since our cars OBVIOUSLY wouldn't come with one. Everything I read on the AEM as far as boost control always states that it, "can be used with factory boost solenoid for better control over boost pressures."
Also, I'm going with a 3mm HG, does that require you to change the cam gear on top to allow for a little slack since I know with the HG the timing chain would be a bit tight...if so what kind of cam gear should I get?
And last but not least...which additional gauges do I need, so far I've got boost, EGT, and AFR. I've read about some people using the factory water temp gauge with some modification...would that be ok? And does anyone have any suggestions on the gauge pods? Thanks!

Dump the EGT gauge because you will have the wideband, and get an oil pressure gauge.

It won't come with a solenoid but I think you can run anykind and have it calibrated.

No need for a new cam gear. You may want to take the cog pin out and move it over. Its more of a PITA then its worth though.

Oh yeah...for some reason Honda neglected to put an oil pressure gauge on their current top performing sports car

the aem ems does not come with any display gauges, you can see everything on your laptop once hooked up though. If you want to read everything the ems sees with out the laptop get the serial gauge. You can program that gauge to read up to 19 readings. You would need to buy additional sensors to see oil pre, fuel pre, wide band etc. What I did was buy a standalone oil pres gauge and then got a serial gauge to read wideband, boost pre, water temp. hope this helps a bit

Wow thanks, you're the man , I've never even heard of the serial gauge...though the "displays 19 different readings" part seems familiar...anyway where do you get it? Is it made by AEM as I would assume? Also how many readings will it display at once? That would definitely save me money on gauges I guess

the serial gauge is the shiznet! plus you can daisy chain a bunch of them together and program it to show anything the AEM sees. I have two in my CRX so I can see just about anything I want to.

there's lots of good sensor and boost solenoid control info on AEM's forums, just don't expect a lot of help on there if you post, their forums are kinda dead and the AEM staff doesn't post on there that much anymore.

Boost Control Solenoids:

AEM Boost Control Solenoid (*)
GM Boost Control Solenoid
MAC Boost Control Solenoid (the AEM is a rebadged MAC device)

Do a search on these. There are part numbers and supplier listings.

Gauges

I'm not really one for gauges but with a turbo they are pretty important. I went with the AEM Serial 19 in one in a Greddy A-pillar mount. Love it. Only have the standard set up at the moment but am waiting on an oil pressure sensor and then will set up custom.

The Modifry ECT is great because it restores functionality of your standard ECT gauge and that is important to me. But it becomes kind of obsolete once you set up the serial gauge.

if you get a serial guage you can check the coolent temp that way.
