DIY Tuning the AEM EMS Series II

In this guide, I will take the AEM S2000 AP1 supercharger base map, modify the breakpoints for use with GTX3076R turbo setup.

Download the AEMTuner software v2.91 at aemforums.com. Basemaps for each vehicles are included with the software.

You don't need to be connected to the ECU to modify the tune file. Open up AEMTuner. Don’t load the calibration. Go to file menu and open a new calibration. Choose the current version. In this case, it is the AEM24 01V24. The new calibration is a blank slate.

You want to compare the new blank calibration with the AEM S2000 AP1 supercharged 750cc base map file. Go and open the base map at C:\Program Files (x86)\AEM\AEMTuner\Calibrations\AEM Updates\Honda – Acura folder. Click on the S2000 AP1 supercharged 750cc file. You will have two AEMtuner programs running at the same time. This is tedious (you gotta learn right?), but go through every tab and compare the differences between the New Blank Map and the AEM Base map. Also, in the upper left corner, Click on Display and Display explorer and compare the differences in every single folder and menu. Do the same to the Tabs menu. You’ll get the idea that AEM has given us a pretty good base map to work with.



Close the AEMTuner with the Blank Map. In the AEMTuner with the S2000 AP1 Base map loaded, Click File and Save As…Save as “S2000 AP1 DIYTune”.

Go to the Tuning Tab. Notice the Fuel Map view is displayed as a graph. Change it to a Table Map View like below. Right click on the mouse in the Fuel Map window, View setup, select Table Only. Resize as needed. It is better to have a table view than a graphical view of the fuel map. In the ignition map, notice the ignition values from -13.9 psi to -10.8 psi. We want to keep these ignition values in relation to the Map load when we resize our break points. Notice how you can’t change the Load PSI column > 10.8. The Honda Map sensor is good up to 10.8psi. ***If we go select our MAP Sensor now, we will change the load values and mess up the map.**** So this step must be done later.



Hit Ctrl-P to pull up preferences and set Temperature Units to Fahrenheit Degree. Also verify AFR Units is Gasoline.



The goal is to change the break points from 500 rpm to 11,000 rpm and the load column from -14psi up to 40psi and at the same time keeping the fuel and ignition values intact. Who doesn’t rev to 11,000rpm?

Basically you copy and paste the existing RPM break points, ignition and fuel maps directly to the webapp. You can’t copy the load values directly because it is listed vertical and not tab delimited. Copy to Excel first then paste to the webapp or the program will not run.

*NOTE* There are 17 horizontal Load rows. My preference is to have the 0 psi Load in the middle to have good resolution for boost and unboost sections. Below 0psi is where you spend most of your time accelerating and cruising. I’ll be using the ignition values from the AEM base map for below 0psi. For the Boosted section, my max boost is 16psi so I set my max Load to 18 and divide the section accordingly. I went with 0 4 7 10 12 14 15 16 17 18 for better resolution up top.

In the fuel column, notice the zeros in the -13 and -14 column. Highlight the area and hit the plus sign until the cells are 0.1. 0 values make the webapp unhappy. Highlight each table and copy to the appropriate location on the webapp.



Next, we need to go to the Wizard menu and select the appropriate map sensor in order to input a load value > 10.8 breakpoint. Verify all the settings are related to the AP1 S2000.

Go to the Wizard menu / Setup Wizard and choose the correct configuration for the car.

Feedback: Boost control - Selecc Max Boost
Feeback: O2 control – AEM (Gauge) UEGO Sensor
Ignition Coil – Honda S2000 (2000-2005)
Injectors: Primary – Injector Dynamics ID1000 – fuel pressure 43PSI
Sensor: Air Temp (AIT) – Honda S2000 (2000-2005)
Sensor: CAM/Crank Position - Honda S2000 (2000-2005)
Sensor: Coolant Temp – Honda (all others)
Sensor: Manifold Pressure (MAP) – Omni-power 4Bar.
Sensor: O2 #1 (AFR) – AEM Digital Gauge (PN 30-4100)
Sensor: Vehicle Speed (VSS) - Honda S2000 (2000-2005)



Notice how once the Omni 4 Bar map sensor is selected, the Load values changed from -14.7 to 43.1. You can’t copy and paste the new load break points into the Fuel map. Individually go to each cell and type in the new break pt values from -14 to 18. The numbers will round up or down. Copy the new rpm break points directly into the fuel map.

Next, copy and paste the new calculated fuel and ignition values on the webpage to the ignition and fuel tables. Compare the difference from the base map to the new map. Looks pretty good! File and save map.




Go to each tab and review the settings.

I set the Fuel Cut Load (Boost fuel) to 18psi. You can start with fuel cut close to your waste gate spring until you can tune your boost up. Problem with this is when you hit boost fuel cut, you’ll get a violent jerk and an exhaust pop.



Under Fuel tab, set O2 FB Control to OFF. Select off then hit enter. Once the idle is tuned, we can turn it back on.
Set the lean and rich limit to -14.8 / +14.8.



Notice how AEM set the Boost Fuel Trim for their fuel map. Set Boost Fuel Trim to zero.




Zero out everything under the Boost Tab. Set WG Base Duty to zero's and set the Boost Target VSS to zero. We want to run start out running wastegate boost.

Apply those calibration values to the AIT and Coolant calibration table. Default AEM values are off.



Back to the Tuning Tab

Setting up for 1 degree of retard per pound of boost.

Looking at the ignition map, at the 0psi load, the 23.4 ignition value appears to be the average ignition at this load.
Set the row from 4500rpm to 11000rpm at 23.4.
Then highlight everything above between 4500 and 11000 and set the value to 23.4.
Go back and high light the 3.9Psi Load row from 4500 to 11000 and subtract 4. Do the same for 7.1psi Load row and subtract 7. Repeat up to 17.9psi. In the last box, the highlighted square is interpolated horizontally to keep the map clean. We will never hit those areas.



Now we have a workable ignition map for boost. The ignition values are severely retarded in the 14-18psi region. Once the lower boost levels are tuned, we then can increase the values in this region.



MAP Sensor re-adjustment
Missed the updated Omni 4bar Values.


This change in the Map sensor calibration will shift the ignition and fuel values. To keep ignition and fuel tables intact, highlight each table and copy and paste to excel.

The Startup

Set the O2 feedback tables in the Display / Display Explorer / O2 Sensor Feedback / O2 FB target table.
Row -14.7 to -7.9 set to 14.7
Row --6.1 set to 14.4
Row -3.9 set to 14.0
Row -2.0 set to 13.4
Row 0.0 Set to 13.0
Row 4.1 Set to 12.5
Row 7.1 Set to 12.0
Row 10.1 to 17.0 Set to 11.8





First ever Laptop connection to the EMS

*Make sure an A/F wideband is wired correctly to the AEM EMS*

Connect the EMS by usb or serial. Turn ignition to on. Fuel pump should prime. Open up the AEMTuner software. The AEMTuner should connect to the EMS. Go to ECU / Upload EMS Firmware and upload V24 firmware. Without the updated firmware, we will not be able to load the S2000 AP1 DIYTune.cal file. Load the S2000 AP1 DIYTune.cal file.

*IMPORTANT STEP* Go to the Wizards / Set Throttle Wizard and calibrate the throttle range.


Start the car. It will run like crap. Don't let it run too long. The fuel map runs pig rich. Adjust the fuel map values to acceptable A/F levels. Hit the +/- sign or enter a value to change the value of each individual cell. Here are the fuel cell numbers to get the car to idle 14-15 A/F. Load should be at -9psi @ 1000rpm with a +/- 0.8 fuel cell.. Note O2 feedback is off. Monitor the A/F levels in the EMS software and the Wideband gauge. They should match. If not, you may have a grounding issue or calibration issue in the EMS. Adjust as needed.

Adjust the fuel cells boxed in red to get the car idle at stoichiometry (14.7:1).

Once the idle section is tuned, calculate the percentage of fuel difference between the Aem basemap and the tuned idle. Look at the fuel pulse width of the Aem base map at “-9.1,1000” cell. It is 1.1088. The new cell value at “-9.1,1000” is 0.756. 0.756/1.1008 = 0.6818. Using this calculation, our fuel map is assumed to be 68.18% of the Aem base map. Load the original “S2000 AP1 DIYtune.01V24.cal” and multiply the Fuel map by 68.18 percentage using AEMpro calculation.

Tuning at the edge on 91 octane, ~500hp. Boost up to 17-18psi with timing advance at 10. Torque power where hp and torque cross at 5200rpm is ~350. Knock volt spiking to ~2.2.

Great! It is nice seeing others post up. I wish we could get this stuff stickied. A guide like yous would have been a HUGE help when I first started. I have no experience with a stand alone and spent a unbelievable amount of time reading and researching. I have litterly read the AEM manual at least 5 times. I printed it and have it highlighted and tabed like a text book.

When I get sometime I will try and add to it with tips and tricks I learned and posted on like:

Setting up tuning tabs which can be imported to others computers
Modifing the Displayed Parameter Tables
Calibrations for the feedback loops
