OEM intake mod

So I have been doing research on cold air intakes. The one pictured below has great reviews but it seems like if I just remove the cover on my OEM intake it is pretty close to the same thing. Am I missing something?

Another question is if I decide to go supercharger am I going to have trouble passing smog in Cali? It looks like the SOS stage 2 would be my choice

Thanks.

Removing the air box cover will increase noise and decrease power. Even the Might Car Mods lads demonstrated that years ago. Search for the LHT airbox modification. It's better in this respect.

Is there such a thing as a CAFE approved supercharger? Plenty of guys in California have them I'm sure but not sure how they pass smog. The aftermarket ECU you'll need is probably certified "for of road use only" as well.

No, K&N intake is supposed to sit tight against the hood, minimizing the heat soak (although people have noticed heat soak, especially in the hotter climate; I didn't have that problem). Removing the airbox leads to major heat soak, you'll notice it right away, even in moderate weather.

Removing the stock airbox lid will suck in a lot of hot air coming off the radiator and significantly reduce power.

Thanks, great info.

You're not going to pass smog with an SOS S/C kit since it's not CARB legal. You'll need to remove part of the kit and hook up the vacuum lines back to stock to pass the visual.
