OEM Oil cooler or emissions device
 

Hi All

I'm in the process of running a new oil cooler in behind the front bumper and am thinking of removing the OEM Oil donut from the car. My question to everyone is; Is it there to help heat up the car quicker for emissions purposes only or is there any other benefit of having it on the car?

The reason i ask is i am running the HKS supercharger kit and the clearance is fairly tight, i would prefer to swap this donut out for a sandwich plate i can run sensors too.

Any information would be much appreciated

I've run my car for over 6 years with oil cooler behind the radiator and the OEM oil cooler removed. Lots of track days, etc. It just increases warm-up time. I'd run a higher-temp thermostat, 200F.

Do you monitor oil temp on motorways? interested to know how much different the oil temp runs without it in place

The factory oil cooler/heater heats up the oil until it reaches normal operating temperature. Once the engine load raises the oil temp above normal, it helps pull heat out of the oil.

Your call, I vote to keep it when possible.

Is there any other advised location to run oil temp and pressure sponsors? If I keep this donut in place there won't be space to run a sandwich plate for both the cooler and sensors.

Spa Pressure sender goes in OEM sensor position and you can buy a sump plug with tapped 1/8 NPT thread in it.

Yea i understand the principle of temperature differences but it would be interesting to know if Honda put it in purely as an emissions device or is they had any intention of using it to cool oil as well.

I was also interested to know how effective it is at cooling oil, if there is any recorded data with and without as a comparison.

I cant place my oil cooler in the same position as you due to the intercooler pipework so i think i will be placing the cooler behind the front bumper in front of the wheel arch. I believe i'm limited to around a 19 Row due to space but i think this should be sufficient.

Your an absolute legend, seem to be helping me out quite a bit lately. Am i right in thinking the OEM oil temp sensor is just a on/off switch to turn a dash light on. It wont affect the car if i remove it and replace with the spa sensor?
