Default Where to buy 3/4" oil drain hose?

Hey everyone-

I noticed my oil drain line is slowly deteriorating. I have been working on a bracket to pull it away from the header, and am going to be installing it this weekend (bracket incorporates insulation as well). That should fix the only heat issue with this kit (HP Performance), and it is only an issue because I drilled the girdle instead of the pan for the return line (plenty of clearance down lower).

I picked up a little bit of 3/4" heater hose from Autozone, but I am not sure it will work, as there are "flameguard" and high temp stuff printed on the line that is currently on there, and non on the heater hose. The new hose is the standard "goodyear" heater hose that Autozone sells.

I was wondering how hot the oil got, and if this heater hose will work... If not, do any national chains (Autozone, Pep Boys, Advanced Auto Parts, Lowes, Home Depot, etc.) sell the hose I need? The hose is not compromised at the current time, but I figure I might as well replace it while I am down there installing the bracket...

Thanks again guys!

John

i have the hose that home depot sells for my return line. After it has been on the car for around 3k miles i noticed its much more flimsy. seems to be working alright though.

I have done a bit of research, and it appears the main difference in the hoses are the number of material ply's within the silicone. I have found hoses from 1-4 ply, the operating temp for single is around 350*, with 4-ply being around 500* (from one website's product listing... so take those stats for what they are worth). Heater hoses being single ply and I am assuming turbo hoses are multi-ply maybe? I have also found a few heater hoses only rated to 212*... scary, as I am almost positive the oil will be hotter than that...

My pipes are all ceramic coated and I am going to be installed an insulated bracket that will insulate/pull back the line from the header. I am just wondering if the hot oil will do anything... not sure how hot that stuff gets, but the turbine is hot as hell after driving around for a bit...

Most big rig truck repair shops/dealers sells oil hose for cheep, water hose will brake down and swell up. Some times you could get away with fuel injection hose.

Thanks for the input. I called local big rig repair shops, and they all said that semi trucks use pre-bent solid drain lines from the factory... So no luck there.

I got the only performance shop in town looking for some high temp line among their dealers, and I should be getting a call back tomorrow with results.

What type of line is everyone else using?

try "Sterling & Western Star"‎ 4755 Capital Cir NW Tallahassee, FL 32303 (850) 701-0163, I use there PHX branch all the time. Most truck shops have bad customer service but will still get you the parts. Just tell them it

Regular rubber heater hose will certainly deteriorate from the oil over time, but DO NOT use silicone hose on an oil line just because it is rated for a higher temperature. I wouldn't even use it on a vacuum line that is likely to see some oil via blow-by. Silicone hose will swell up into a squishy sponge when in constant contact with oil.

Is the current hose just clamped on there, or are there fittings crimped or clamped on the ends?

clamped. I found a local retailer of 3/4" steel braided hose. Went ahead and got a good bit of it for running this weekend. $7.50/ft is NOT CHEAP! Guess that is what I get for living in the middle of nowhere...

I had since discovered what you just said... that standard silicone hose would swell and deteriorate... The guy said this hose was designed for oil, and was some sort of composite rubber... He said it was good to around 400* or so on the inner lining... I hope the oil is not that hot! He said another guy in town was using the same hose on his Supra, so I guess it OK for FI...
