I took a road trip to southwest Virginia for a VT football game, did some crazy driving in the back roads around Blacksburg, then on my way home dropped by Deal's Gap to joust with the Dragon (5 times )! I surivived (though my tires didn't), and came away with a few nice pics. First two are on the Dragon, third one is from Blacksburg... click on 'em to supersize for $0.39.

The "Dragon" is one of the most awesome stretches of road you will ever drive in your S (or any other car or sportbike for that matter.) Located in the heart of the Smokey Mountains between Tennessee and NC, lies a little stretch of Hwy 129 that has been nicknamed "Tail of the Dragon". It's official name is Deal's Gap. This short beauty of a road contains 318 turns in an 11-mile stretch.
We've had several S2K events at the Dragon, which have officially been named "DragonBall". Airgate was our fearless leader and organizer for the last event in September. As usual, a grand time was had by all. We had over 60 cars this time.
For more info on the event and a link to the Tail of the Dragon site, go here , or just check the DragonBall Forum on the main S2ki Forum page.
Sorry, I just assumed everyone new WTF I was talking about...guess I shoulda been more clear . But yes, smccoy is correct in his description of the road. But honestly, I had more fun on the roads around Blacksburg...they were quicker, more dramatic g-loads, not quite so dangerous, and DRY. Can't fault the road for being wet though. And actually, that probably saved me...I actually had to stop in Auburn on my way home the next day and buy new rear tires. My tires (SO-3's) had swaths about 5 inches wide that were dead smooth . Cord showing in a couple places too. Not the best for driving home in the rain! Anyway, still lots of fun .
Tedow...what was your tire pressure I wonder? I'd ran the Dragon with airgate's Dragonball this past summer and chewed mine up as well. But I'd discovered I'd run the Dragon on 25# PSI Woulda been an excellent idea to have checked my tire pressure before I'd run it...rather than after, huh? Oh well...(for me, at least), they say the best lessons learned are the ones that cost ya...and mine cost me a new set of rears.
Also...I'd add regarding The Dragon -- additional to the length and its curves...what also stands out for me is that for that entire stretch there isn't a single driveway or cross-road one. So your only concern (besides driving your S to its limit) is watching on-coming traffic and each staying in your own lane. Excellent piece of road. Mmmmm...Dragon meat is delicious!
