Another option for the sagging shift boot is to put a large washer over the shift rod below the boot--- it holds the top edge of the boot up yet allows it to move freely. I found a large nylon washer at my local ACE hardware that fit perfectly.

I was considering a shift knob from moddiction. But even if I get a shift knob from them won't I still need that lock nut?

Unless it's something you really want, order a knob without a pattern. Personally, I prefer it this way.
Edit- I'm not using a locknut and this will allow the knob to sit a few mms lower. The locknut is supposed to prevent the knob from comming loose but, I've never had this problem

IIRC they come with lock nuts, but I never put it on, just for that little extra touch of lowness. It tightened down really well and has stayed put ever since :)

You will only need the locknuts if you want to raise the height of the shift knob itself. That or if you buy an engraved shift knob you usually use them to align the engraving. I am all out of stock of engraved shift knobs currently however.
The way my height adjustment works though is the adjustment nuts fit inside the shift knob. That way you don't see them and the shift knob can also sit much lower than most knobs that use a locknut. There is a "step" inside the shift knob where the nuts tighten against to lock it in place.
For any non engraved knob, most just never use the nuts at all for it to sit very low and should be nice and flush with your shift boot or very close. Should drop the height by about 1"
