Guide: How to change Spoon windshield wiper blade inserts
I have the Spoon wiper blades because (1) they look cool, (2) they're a modified OEM wiper with aero bits attached by Spoon so the quality is top notch, and (3) they don't lift on the highway at 80 mph like all the aftermarket versions liked to do on my car. I checked the springs and they were fine so I just opted to do this instead. After all, who doesn't like seemingly unnecessary and random Spoon parts?
Despite the wipers themselves costing $100+, a lot of people don't know that the blades themselves are replaceable and they're like $6 each from Honda. Part numbers: 76632-S7S-J01 (400mm length for the driver's side) and 76632-S6M-003 (500mm length for the passenger's side).
Anyway, replacement of the blades themselves is simple. Here is a photo guide:
First things first, lift the wiper blade. For this photo example, I'm using the shorter driver-side arm but the longer passenger-side arm is the same. You do not have to remove the assembly to take off the rubber insert.
If you look, you'll see the inboard-most tab (or the outboard-most tab on the passenger-side arm) locks into place into the rubber insert.
To remove the blade, pull the wiper insert down like so and pull the blade out. It'll take a bit of force but you'll get it out.
Once it's free, slide the thing out.
When you get to the last one, there is a tab that will stop it from releasing.
Fold it down like so and pull, and it should come free.
Inside the old wiper, there are two metal strips. These strips give the blade tension. You will be swapping them into the new insert.
The strips are mirrored so you can't really mix them up, but I made sure to put them on the same side. Just make sure the cut-out/indent is facing inward as it locks into the new wiper insert.
You will want to stick it into the top groove. It's pretty easy to do.
When you get to the end, stretch the wiper insert so that the metal tab fully seats into the slot. At this point, it should be locked in and will not fall out.
This is what it will look like once you have them inserted.
Begin to slide the arm back through the tabs. Make sure you get them through all the tabs. Take your time.
When you get to the end, all you need to do is push a bit and the final tab will lock into the hole.
Once it's locked in, you're good. Put the blade back down and do the other side.
And that's it. You're done. Ezpz. Make sure you clean your windshield and give them a test. I want to note that one blade was from Japan and one was from Malaysia, and the Japanese one seems to wipe a bit better without streaks. It is what it is, but for $12 total I don't care. I've run these wiper blades for a few years now and love them.
