Default how to check if shocks are still good?

hey guys, i came upon a set of used koni yellow shocks for sale.. i was just wondering if there is anyway to tell if the shocks are still in good condition by looking at it? is there some way where u push down on the shock with your hand to test if the compression of the shock is still good? i found a set for 300 bucks with about 15,000 miles on them, what u guys think?? buy or dont buy?

the only way to look at them is see if they are leaking, if it looks wet or anything they are bad. the easiest way is if they are on a car you can do a "bounce" test. if you can manage to push the piston with your hand they are for sure bad, but you should not be able to do that

first check if there is any oil like fluid around the shock, another way to tell is to push down on it (remove springs of course if its mounted) and it should very smoothly come up...

If it stays down, pass on them!

HUH? I've always been able to push or pull the piston by hand.

It's not always been easy, but doable. Any roughness in the movement or a big dead spot when you change directions has always been a source of concern.

This is what i have always been told. I usually just compress the shock w/ my hand (springs removed of course) and if it feels smooth going all the way down, and then rebounds smoothly by itself, then there most likely isn't a problem.

i know what you are saying, it would also depend on the shock. some are harder than others. we are all saying about the same thing though

I also bought a pair of Koni yellows which are still sitting next to my TV but my front shocks do not have the adjustment attachments/keys. Is there anywhere to buy them? I was told i could use a screw driver. But I havent really looked at them yet and wont be able to for a while since I am deployed right now. Anyhelp would be great!

Look for any leaks. I am not sure you can compress the shock by hand, but if installed on the car you can do the rebound test on each corner
