How to Install New Floormats w/ Anchors in AP1
 

How to Install new floor mats in your AP1.

Time required: 1 hour or less
Items Needed:

1. Dremmel with metal cutting aparatus
2. Drill with metal drilling bit
3. Knife or Exacto Knife
4. Tape Measure
5. Screw Driver
6. 3M doublesided tape extra strength
7. Second Floormat Anchor
8. (2) New Carpets for floor

Instructions:

Step 1: Assess the situation

Do your floormats look like these?

Well time to throw them out and get some fresh new ones. See you in hell old floormats.

Step 2: Make sure you have correct second anchor. (skip to step 3 if you have correct anchor)

If you are like me you purchased an exact replica of the anchor you already have, and if you try to just place anchor and new floor mats into position, you will see that it doesn't fit because the position of the prong is too far to the left despite how far right you place the anchor due to the center tunnel. If you have the same exact anchors, you will have to do an extra step and cut one of the anchors... like this:

After this is done, take your handy 3M double sided tape :thumbup:

and stick the prong on top like this:

Step 3: Position both original anchor and new anchor to fit with new floormats.

By doing this, you may or may not have to reposition your original floormat anchor (left). Mine was off by maybe 2 centimeters, so i removed the original anchor and moved it over to where it should be and drilled into the metal, as so:

The second anchor you will have to cut into the carpet, in similar fashion as your original anchor looks. For this you can use an exacto knife, but since i didn't have one, i just used a standard kitchen knife and it worked. Position anchor and check fit the new carpet to the original anchor and figure out where the new anchor should be placed. Drill and screw. Heres what that looks like:

You may at this time want to replace the sticky tape on your old anchor in order to make sure the carpet flaps stay down. Your new anchor should have fresh tape waiting to be peeled on it already, so apply it. and press flap down:

Step 4: Place in New Driver Side Carpet

Step 5: The Hardest Step; the Passanger Side Carpet

Is it possible to simply buy the ap2 anchors?

I've never even thought about using anchors after 7-8 years of ownership. Sounds like a hassle. If you feel like the stock mats move too much (I never did), you could by some extended floor mats (there are multiple options). They stay in place better and protect the carpet on the cross member. That's why I bought them.

Actually I can only think of two full length floor mats available now and they are both $200+ which I cannot bring myself to spend on something I'm going to be wiping my dirty shoes on every day.

After owning an 00 I can say the single post mats are a must-change item. Every time you get in or out of the car the mat tries to pivot on the single post, causing the mat to constantly be crooked in the footwell. The fix is easy, buy the second post from Honda and glue it to the floor pan with Shoe-Goo.

Even better is to get the OEM extended mats from the UK forum. 2 posts on each side, protection for the floor pan humps, and better quality carpet than the base OEM mats. Expensive but worth it.
