Default new owner with question about UK mod

Just picked up the car (2005 AP2)a week ago and spent almost the whole time changing fluids, filters etc etc.
Now that I've had a chance to drive it (car is dead stock), the exhaust sound has GOT TO CHANGE! It is way too quiet.
However, I want a mod that will be a bit louder and "mellow" like an Austin Healey 3000 or my old Jag E-type. I definitely do not want raspy or ricey. I'm thinking UK mod with about a 1" or 1 1/4" bypass (sorry, I never did embrace the metric system). Is my thinking consistent with the results I'm seeking?

If you go uk mod leave the stock cat in there..

or get a test pipe and try that out with the oem exhaust.

I purchased 34mm pipe (about 1.3 inch) and with the stock cat sounds pretty good, but when I tried a test pipe it became way too raspy.

I posted a few videos of my UK mod you can check out. I did one video with a 70mm test pipe but it was a bit to loud so I removed it. My UK mod is a 1.5/8" stainless tubing.

I did the 38mm exhaust mod and was happy for about a week. It was barely audible for me even with the top down.

Granted, after a week I cut out the resonator and now I'm thrilled with the note. 3500-5000 rpm the tone is just amazing, and with the top up...unless I'm in the vtec, it is not noticeable in the cab.

I have it, love it.
I didn't want an exhaust, and I wanted something just a tad louder than stock to where people go "hrm, is that stock?" without the actual change out of the exhaust system since I love the look of the oem exhaust, and wanted to retain a close factory exhaust note.
