What I’ve done in the past is a very light coat for the first coat. Like it should almost dry instantly. Hold the can further away and sort of dust it. Let it sit for a little before coming back with a second more full coat. Still doesn’t need to full cover. Gradually getting full coverage. The primer is basically doing the same thing though and it looks good.

So spent the day painting and doing valve clearances, this is the end result. Thanks for the help and hope this helps someone else in the future

Went with Halfords etching primer then VHT wrinkle red SP204 and wrinkle black SP201

Yeah looks good now. Yeah you def have to use primer that's for sure. Here's my K20 valve cover that I did in vht wrinkle black a few years ago and has held up great over the years. No issues.
