Yonaka Exhaust - Review
 

I’ve been browsing exhausts for a while trying to come to a decision on what will work best for me. I really wanted a sub $1000, quiet, light, single exhaust, only to find that what I wanted does not seem to exist.

When considering options I kept coming back to a Yonaka exhaust. It’s a 3” exhaust, seems to be marketed as quiet-ish, manufacturer videos online that sound good, and it’s currently priced at $279 shipped. Every “review” I found consisted of people that had never seen it, never heard it, but all universally claimed it was junk. Given significant physical and financial upside, and what appears to be 100% speculative downside I decided to give it a shot and in the process I thought I’d share an actual review of the product.

The exhaust was packaged very well, neatly wrapped and very well protected. It even came with a few extras; shirt, beanie, license plate frame. My initial impressions were solid. The exhaust looks really nice, fitment is perfect, it’s a straight through muffler and resonator (tennis ball rolls right through the exhaust), and it weighed in at 23.5lbs (on my highly unofficial bathroom scale). I've seen some ebay exhausts that were very poorly put together with some nasty interior edges and clear flow issues, this exhaust had none of those issues.

The exhaust sounds amazing in vtec, and it’s quiet at idle. If I could manage to keep this thing idling or in vtec at all times I’d be in love. Volume wise I’m getting to be a grumpy old man and the exhaust is a louder than I prefer and it drones like most aftermarket exhausts, in the 3000-3600 rpm range. I’ve run a Comptech exhaust on a prior S2000 and a Tanabe Medallion on a G35, both are pretty conservative and more along the lines of what I was hoping for (although not really what I was expecting). The Yonaka exhaust was substantially louder than those, but not obnoxiously louder. I initially had a straight testpipe on the car and swapped it out for a resonated testpipe. That definitely helped tame it a bit more.

Overall I’m quite happy with the purchase, I don’t think you could expect more for the price. Of course the true test will be how it does in the long run. For posterity, the exhaust was installed at 136k miles, I’ll report back if I run into any issues with it. If this thing holds together I think it will prove to be a great option for a lot of people.

Could always add a second resonator in the front a 3 inch to help with the drone a bit. Would still keep the price super low. You would have to bring it to an exhaust shop if you couldn't do the work yourself.

Thanks for the replies. I do have a leftover super quiet 3" exhaust from a prior car that I haven't been able to sell locally. I figured worst case scenario I could rob some parts from it. The Helmholtz resonator sounds promising, that may be an easier/cleaner option for taming this thing a bit.

IMO, other than proper fitment, its hard to mess up a robot welded, straight-thru exhaust system. Even harder when the flow path is as straight as this one. If looks and sound work for you, then :thumbup:. Thanks for the review!
