Gonna go for a Kia 4.77 in my AP2 out of a sportage, just gotta take a trip to the You-Pull-It junkyard sometime soon... I know it may be over kill, but so its 25lbs of boost in an FI AP2.

can anyone throw out some quick computations on what the respective gear sets will lower you top speed to?

any gear lower than the 4.10's is going to be better unless your goal is high HP SC or turbo.

if you do lots of Hwy go 4.44 or 4.56.
I like my 4.77's make the car great for around town, I got them from HTG, good service and he can make them stronger than stock. They run 600 more RPM's and have an increase of 16%.

I'm no expert, but when you go turbo, depending on the size of the turbo (larger turbos spool up slower), you need time for it to spool up and extract all the power out of your set-up before you reach your shift point. The shorter the gears, the quicker you run through your gears.

Please someone correct me if i'm wrong smile.gif
makes sense, but then why do supercharged guys go with like 4.56 gears and what-not?

please excuse my n00b questions. haha.
because it still helps with acceleration. usually superchargers dont make it hard to put down power in gears are enough to warrant longer gears in most peoples opinions. Also superchargers run off engine so don't have a spool time like turbos they go on how fast the engine is spinning not exhaust.

lots of people with turbo chargers keep the 4.1 stock, some if they have enough power have even dropped down to 3.9 because they find they cant put power down and still need longer gears to fully utilize the power in the lower gears.

okay so using the calculator

AP1
4.10 = 165MPH
4.56 = 149MPH
4.77 = 142MPH
6.00 = 113MPH

AP2
4.10 = 151MPH
4.56 = 135MPH
4.77 = 129MPH

it's probably out there though. the 4.77s seem pretty good as they are without getting too extreme with shifting early. it'd be interesting to try a super high geared differential out for a day...
