help with gears please!
Tried searching several terms but no matter what I try, I keep getting "no match".
Where can I go to buy some gears? I want to get either 4.57 or 4.77. Also, can someone please give me an idea of what installation costs would be? Thanks!
EDIT: oh and 1 more question. Let's say I get 4.77s. How high would the RPM's be around 60-70 mph? Would they be so high that it would strain the engine if I were to take 30 minute highway trips 3-4 times per week?
ANOTHER EDIT: Ok so I managed to find the official gears thread, so I know where to find them for sale now. It would still be helpful if someone could tell me what kind of installation costs to expect.

4.57-search for and PM S2KPUDDYDAD he might have some in stock
4.77 PM on of the online vendors I'm sure they can get you a good deal
price of installation? where are you located, talk to someone in your area, prices could vary.
i believe 4.77 would put you at about 500rpms more, im not 100%
no it wouldn't put a strain on the engine, plenty of people DD with 4.77 you'll be fine. GL with your journey

if you have 4.77s. in 6th gear, you'll be at 64mph @4000rpms. 70mph is about 4400-4600. i drive 60 miles round trip on the highway for work. its definitely something that you need to adjust to but it helps discipline you to NOT speed on the highway.
my trips are close to 40 minutes to work and going home. ive had them for roughly over a year and i have yet to have any issues. just stay on top of your fluid intervals and you should be fine.

^ Thanks for the input guys.
1 more question that came to mind. The official gears thread has a link to a kia parts store with 4.77s, and also the link to the Science of Speed site.
The gears from the kia site are priced at 250, and the ones from SOS are 450. Is there any difference between the quality or anything? I would much rather save $200 and get the kia ones but the idea of putting kia parts in the S is strange to me. Can anybody give me some input on this?

Before you get the 4.77 FD ask yourself whether you are comfortable changing gears because the change will mean you'll be making a lot more shifts.
IMO the S has the best clutch/gearbox combo out there - it's designed for quick gear changes and the 4.77 gears will enhance that characteristic.
I've been driving 'stick' for 25+ years, so I'm used to it. The gears suit my driving style in that respect. My S is like a banshee - it begs to be revved and seems to be straining on a leash at all times. The car is now more hooligan than cruiser.
I love it

having gears feels like you have a REAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLY tight throttle cable. acceleration on the highway in 6th feels great. i'm really anxious to upgrade to a lighter flywheel just to see how much faster it'll rev.
as far as where to get them, the guy i bought the diff from already had then cryotreated and installed by hardtopguy. i think he paid 1400 shipped. i ended up giving him 800 plus my stock diff. also keep in mind about gear whine. i have never heard mine whine but then again my exhaust is loud and my radio is always up but i know for a fact 4.57s and some 4.44s whine. its not that noticeable but its there. in all honesty ive rode in a car with 4.57s and i barely felt the difference. if you dont mind shifting alot, 4.77s is the way to go.

I bought my 4.77's with everything thru hardtop guy. Rind and Pinion, yellow box and install parts was around $640 and then I paid $600 for install through a honda mechanic close to me. $600 seems like a lot but they cleaned the diff case, replaced some bearings and took their time with it so it was money well spent IMO.
To put into perspective you're running a good 700-800 RPM more than the stock 4.10's but the payoff is great. Highway cruising takes some discipline cause at 80mph you're at 5100-5200RPM. You hit VTEC in 6th at 93mph.
