Starting with Gears and a Tune
#11
Never understood how people come from platforms with more torque and get disappointed when they notice the car only makes 150~ ft/lbs or torque and performs like it vs what they are used to..
Your previous car had a 3.5L v6, now you have a 2.2L inline 4.. Were you really expecting the car to feel like a 350Z?

I don't see what all the hype is about cars with bigger power....I feel like the s2k is fast and performs great on all aspects...may not have all the power but I would rather drive my02 rather then my buddys 350z any day....plus I eat him up in the corners

I already find my AP2 to be geared somewhat-annoyingly low. I definitely would not want to lower the final drive any more than stock. Gears + exhaust/intake mods (or "noise mods") are going to make your car a never-ending resonating buzz box. It may sound like a good idea, but it's going to make your car less friendly to drive for extended periods of time.
YMMV, of course.

I had 4.77 gears + full bolt ons and a tune on my AP1. While it was fun, it didn't really fix the low torque problem and the car was actually slower than a stock car after about 80. I put the stock gears back in to prepare for boost and retuned the car (changed from AEM to KPro) the tune is about 300% better on the KPro device, and now I don't miss my gears at all. At first the car felt sluggish on the AEM box and tune but now that my tune is really dialed in on KPro, I love the driving feel more than I did with the gears.
Point of the story is, if you're really itching for more power, just make more power, the gears really won't scratch your itch.
I would recommend for you AT LEAST a test pipe and flashpro. The test pipe replaces the car but frees up the exhaust and allows vtec to be lowered to around 4k rpms, which means at full throttle you'll gain upwards of 20-25 ft/lbs of torque.
However if you are wanting big power out of this car, just boost it, the car can handle 400-450whp no problem in stock form.

I wouldn't shorten the gears on an AP2. Top speed in each gear is already much lower than AP1. If you are commuting 50 miles a day you are just going to increase fuel consumption by lowering gears. Why are you replacing your diff anyway?
Are you hitting redline in each gear? A lot of people coming from torquier lower reving cars tend to under-rev at first. It takes a while to get used to leaving it in the lower gear.

I am running 4.44 gears in an ap2. Gas milage lowers very little as long your not trying to rev the engine high at every stop light. I do not regret it at all, it makes the car easier to drive. It for sure doesnt give it a boat load of torque, but it is noticable. Best mod for the money.
