2010 S2K Challenge #1 - 1/31/10 - Buttonwillow
After a one month hiatus from the 2009 Series Finale, the S2K Challenge participants geared up for yet another exciting year! The season opener for the 2010 S2K Challenge was held at Buttonwillow Raceway on January 31, 2010.
During December 2009, the S2K Challenge community collaborated to create a refined set of rules/classifications for the 2010 season. Thanks to all those that actively participated in the discussion to ensure a more competitive playing field! In 2010, we created a new Stock Class, which is catered toward newcomers with a completely stock S2000. This class also benefits from a lower cost of participation as well as offering a level playing field and direct driver-to-driver skill comparisons.
The weather for the season opener couldn't have been better...with a high of only 60F...conditions were ripe for FAST lap times. Attendance was also spectacular, with 23 drivers participating in the Time Trial at the end of the day. It is quite amazing how fast the participants have gotten, with average lap times significantly lower than last year at Buttonwillow.
Stock Class
The new Stock Class was exciting to watch as participants with stock setups battled it out for driver skill supremacy! Charles Ng, completely dominated the Class and setting a new BONE-stock (trademark) record at Buttonwillow #13 with a blazing 2:04!!! Congratulations to Albert Gavieres (2nd) and Kaho Hui (3rd) for their podium finishes! It was also exciting to watch the newer participants improve throughout the day as instruction combined with seat time resulted in faster lap times. (Missing pics of 2nd/3rd place...I will update soon)
Street Class
Street Class heralded the return of many of last year's participants and several new faces...welcome! Ben the Frenchie aka "Most Improved" driver of 2009 took 3rd place. Arch nemesis Joel and Nam battled it out for the top two, with Joel BARELY edging out Nam, much to Nam's chagrin.
Modified Class
The ever competitive Mod Class featured lap time performance that blew away most people's expectations. A standard measure of fast performance at Buttonwillow #13 is a 2:00 lap time. At our season opener, ALL the podium finishers in Mod Class achieved sub-2:00 lap times!!! Jim Tway, our Mod Class newcomer came in at 3rd place and Mark Tsai (last year's Mod Class champ) came in at 2nd place. The most impressive feat of the day was Si Tang; he blew his diff on his own car and was sidelined for most of the day. However, he borrowed Mike Tsay's car for the Time Trial and achieved an amazing 1:57 lap time! Had Si participated in Redline Time Attack's Modified Class in 2009, he would have been only 1sec (and change) away from from 1st place!
Unlimited Class
Our exhibition class featured Owen Guo's heavily modified S2000. We hope that more sponsor shops and other Unlimited cars will participate in future events as they recognize the growing popularity of the S2K Challenge Series!

I'm pretty proud of my 2:00 (personal best) during my first practice session but wow have the Mod Class guys stepped it up! I was having issues with a notchy transmission after the first session and I couldn't get into 4th/5th on key parts of the track which was quite frustrating. I hope changing the fluid will help...otherwise I'm in the market for a new tranny.
Here a video of my sloppy 2:00. Given the same setup (with a properly functioning tranny) and weather, I'm confident I can break the 2 minute barrier. Cheers!
