265/35/18 A052 vs 285/30/18 RE71R
 

Hey guys, im at a crossroad here. Wondering/debating which tires I should get. 265/35/18 Yoko A052 vs 285/30/18 RE71R mounted on a 10'' wheel.

Reviews on the A052 seem great. RE71R is a strong tire. Keep in mind, these tires would be used for a couple HPDE, test & Tune prior to race weekends and I would most likely do a couple races with them until I get Hoosiers.

Considering that a 285/30/18 is a better diameter than a 265/35/18 and that the A052 would be about $80 more per set, what would you guys do? Both tires are within 1lb of eachother.

Car is N/A. Full cage. Spliter, Wing. Tein 12kg/10kg (yes I know, too soft but one thing at a time).

What are the rules you are running under? In either width, you would have made fender modifications to fit.

The A052 also comes in 295/30-18 and 315/30-18. The 295/30 is the same diameter as a 255/40-17, a common S2000 size. The 315/30 is taller (but not much more than a 265/35) and others have made it work; they used Hoosier A7s but the dimensions are similar. That includes the

On paper, they should be similar. But few on this forum have tried both. There are a few reviews on TireRack on the A052 where the owners like it better than the RE71r. Clearly, less tread for the rain.

Fenders are already modified, well aware of that. Look at the pics. Those are 275/35/18 on the pic. R7s front NT01 rears. I'm running 18x10 +45..

Not interested in 295s A052, Price jumps significantly. Over $500 more for a set... At that price, Im picking up R7s

How do the actual measured tread widths compare? The gossip seems to be that the A052 might handle heat better than the RE71R, but if the RE71R is actually physically much wider, than might make up the difference. But if the A052 is a cheater width, they might actually be pretty close in width.

Federal FZ-201 semi-slick is available in 285 as well, for pennies. Not sure how it stacks up against the others. And the Toyo and Hankook DOT slicks are available in 285 or 295 at cheaper prices than Hoosiers. As David NJ mentioned, it doesn't seem like there are too many people that have tried all the different options and can actually report on the differences. Maybe we can petition Grassroots Motorsports to test something other than the damned Rival 1.5 over and over again, and to test on a real track instead of 25-second cone sprints.

About $220 more a set. The R7 is about $180 more than that.

If racing is the goal, the fastest tire for the length race is the objective. If cost is the issue, there are less expensive tires than any of these: R888R, RR, RC-1, etc

I wouldn't put a 285 on a 10" wheel. I have 275 nt01s on 10.5s and thats still not optimised for section width.

Coming from URGE who has done a lot more testing than us...

Recommend Tire Sizes

• 245/35 on 9.5”
• 255/35 on 10”
• 265/35 on 10.5”
• 295/30 on 11”

The manufactures spec 9.5-10.5 for a 285/30 and 10-11 for a 295/30. Most people here like to the high side. The trick is finding the right offset and width. I believe with an 11 the ideal will be around +30 to +38. STR autocrossers run 17x9 +60 and I believe the NASA TT/ST cars often run 17x10 +48.

I agree that a slight stretch can be beneficial especially on a tire like the NT01 with a very soft sidewall.

The measured thread width on a 285/30 RE71r is on a 10" wide wheel and is measured at 10.3" with a section width of 11.4". Keep in mind that a 285/30 has significantly less sidewall that a 265/35 thus needs less of a stretch.

A052 > RE71
A052's grip better, last longer (better grip throughout the life of the tire), and more feedback.
