4.77 track data
 

Hello,

there are dozens of threads about 4.77 gears but mostly are opinion or feeling reviews.
Anyone swapped gears and ran the car in the same track with the oem ratio that could share the data?

I had a 4.44 on an ap1 it worked well in general - it depends on the track and also tire size.. if you have to shift to 6th then I think you will lose time.
my feeling is with the 4.77 is a step too far you would most likely use 6th a lot

The benefits of this will obviously vary by track. See what speeds you are at the tracks you run and plug it into a gearing calculator. Determine if you will be shift more as well. Anyone who tells you conclusively that any specific gearing is better for every track is leading you down the wrong patch.

What they said ^^^, 100% track-dependent. If 4.77 puts you into a better part of the power curve exiting the most critical corner, and doesn't require an additional upshift, probably there's a benefit. If 4.77 requires you to exit the most critical corner in the next-higher transmission gear and puts you further down the power curve exiting the most critical corner, or if it requires additional upshift(s), it's probably going to cost you time.

Diff gearing is IMO one of the most overrated mods out there. If you are strictly interested in acceleration results *from a standing start*, like 1/4-mile times, gearing should give you an ET benefit up to the point that an additional upshift is required. For stockish power levels and trap speeds below ~102mph, 4.77 will probably reduce E.T. by a couple/few tenths. For trap speeds faster than that, extra upshift will cost you.

For road course/autoX, again, 100% dependent on the circuit what gears are "optimal". In FT86 land one of the most respected track dogs out there traded the "better" 4.3:1 gearing of his '17 model car for the previous 4.1 gearing because that "worse" gearing was better for lap times at the tracks he goes to.

I know it's completely track dependent. I'll shift more with the 4.77 and would use 6th on the straight, but it will also will give me a better exit on some crucial parts on the track and that migh make up for the extra shifts.
I was just hoping for data since I plan on swaping the diff soon.
I think I'll make that adjustment after I fully tune the car or find data for NA cars on similar tracks.

What is your skill level? What tracks do you run? If you are at a low experience level or a high experience level but slow, the gearing will not make a difference and you should just focus on your driving. This question is impossible to answer without knowing more details.

More than likely the extra shifts will slow you down. It is track dependent but extra shifts cost me time when I moved to 4.44 gearing. [edit: yep, 4.44]
