Anyone try Nexen N Fera Sur4 Tires

Shopping for tires and saw these pop up as new.

Anyone run these before?

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....160601170920:s

King Tut 06-01-2016 09:34 AM

I have it on good authority that Nexens, like Federals, do work.

freetors 06-01-2016 11:48 AM

I was wondering that myself. I think it's so new that not many have used them. The price isn't too bad.

Im hesitant to try them being more expensive than a tired and true tire like the RS-3. That being said im getting sent a set to test for feed back for my local distributor. If they ever show up i will update the thread.

trackHERO 06-14-2016 05:56 AM

Just out of curiosity on the price why not go with something that is true and tried for the same price or cheaper like the RE71R or RS3?

boyguan 06-14-2016 09:09 AM

because what if they are faster and better than a RS3?

sillyboybmxer 06-14-2016 01:04 PM

I read elsewhere there is speculation that this is the compound for the new rs3, i dont know about the truth behind it but, rumors

Adding a new unnecessary variable, the tire to beat is the re71r and switching from the rs3 will just unnecessarily complicate growth in the track.

S2000_916 06-14-2016 11:05 PM

i didnt buy them either because 10$$ cheaper doesnt sound worth the risk.

trackHERO 06-15-2016 04:38 AM

The RE71R is by far my favorite tire at this time. They have been amazing at every turn

Requiem 06-15-2016 05:57 AM

RE71R tend to falloff quickly and wear fast for track days.

I havent had that problem. We have run them on our racecar for 4 HSR races and numerous HPDE without them falling off or wearing fast. If you don't get your tire pressures correct they can fall off a little because the pressure rises. We ran RE11 for a long time and once switched to the RE71R we knocked off a second at Sebring on the 2nd lap and were insanely consistent for the entire session

great info!

volcomboy390 07-25-2016 10:08 AM

Any more info..... a 265/35/18 goes for $180, where a rs3 of the same size is 216!

I might try the jump ecstasy v720.... they look good and are also about $180!

Anyone try those yet?

These tires sound INCREDIBLE regardless of cost!

sben07 07-25-2016 06:39 PM

Bringing this post from the dead got these tired a couple of weeks ago paid $540 from tire rack figure I'd see how these tire hold up and handle compare to the more $$$ tire out there.I'm running these on my 2003 S2000 mounted on Ap2V1 wheels so fronts are 215/45r17 and rears 245/40r17. Keep in mind tires I was running before were Direzza ZII so my first impression of these tires was very surprising. These tires warm up fairly quick not like the Dunlop which takes a little to warm them up. So far I've only driven this on the mountain pass which is pretty technical but the grip on these tires is phenomenal. So far I've got almost about 1k miles on these tires. Side wall isn't as stiff as the Dunlop but when cornering the tire response really well even when driving it hard into the turns the car feel really predictable. Just thought I'd shime in. For a Korean made tire first time running Nexen tires these tires have been a good but so far.

I've heard in places that the Nexen is essentially the current RS3 compound, and that Hankook is coming out with a new RS3 soon.

King Tut 07-27-2016 06:06 AM

I'm tempted to try these on my team's BMW E36 truck LeMons car. We could save enough to buy a 5th as a spare tire for the race.

I think the RS3s are cheaper still, as they're on clearance.

They are but the difference is down to about $15 for a set

We run 16" currently so no RS3 options. The pickings are slim in the 225/50/16 and a little better in the 225/45/16. The ZIISS in 225/50/16 is actually at the top of my list currently since we are doing CMP and it destroys tires.

A friend let me to drive his supercharged 350z when he brought it to the track and told me it had nexen tires I was scared!
Anyways he swears they are good and yea jumped in and right away had good grip and was able to corner about as fast as the S2k.
If I didn't know what I was on I would believe it was a DZII RS3 RE171R or any other decent street tire

d1000rr 02-01-2017 07:18 PM

Bump!! Any reviews?
In 265/35/18 sizes these are considerably less expensive than anything else (re71,rs3, etc...)

Singh_snisen 02-01-2017 09:04 PM

This tire is really good for the money. Nfera. Tom Thang put in a good word.

duffman13 04-13-2017 09:03 AM

Bumping this, just bought a set for my rears today, I'll have some impressions in a week when they're mounted. I am mixing them with Rivals, but I had too much tread left on the front to justify buying all 4 corners. I figure if I'm going to have more grip anywhere, I'd want it in the rear anyway.

Chibo 04-13-2017 06:39 PM

I have a set sitting here waiting to go on to replace a set of 255/40-17 RE71Rs. I'd heard they run wide, but I didn't realize HOW wide.

Food for thought:
My 255/40-17 RE71R measures 10" wide. The Sur4 measures 10.5" wide. I'm somewhat worried since I have 17x9 +63 all around and it has cleared so far just fine with unmolested fenders.... and I am L-O-W (12.25"/12" center to fender) This could make it interesting.
Also, $575 shipped for a set of four 255/40-17.

duffman13 04-14-2017 04:29 AM

Good to know - glad I got 245s. I'm on stock suspension anyway though.

duffman13 04-24-2017 07:03 AM

So I just had my rears mounted this weekend (phrasing). First impressions:

1. They look narrower than the Rivals I had on before (245s) to the point where 255 would have had similar treadwidth.
2. Maybe it's because they are new and the tread is deeper, but they are significantly quieter and don't tramline nearly at all.
3. I only have one backroad session on them, but rear grip seems at least as good as the old Rivals.

As a stop-gap tire because I still have half of the tread depth and not a lot of heat cycling on my old fronts, they should do the job. I haven't had much chance to test breakaway characteristics, but they seem like another "zero audible feedback until you're spinning" tire so far from the slip I've given the rear so far. My hope is they wear out at the same time as my fronts so I can do all 4 together in 2018 or 2019. I'll post more impressions when I get them to the track in June. If they hold up to the heat without getting greasy I'll be happy enough. That really ends up being my main concern, since I don't really autocross anymore.

Another note, I definitely need a new alignment, but that will have to wait until end of May just because my social calendar is insane this month.

NOTE: I know some of you are going to think "What the hell is he still doing on OG Rivals?". I'll answer - I bought them on closeout right after the Rival S came out, which was only 2 springs ago. I also put under 5k on the car annually, which is why I'm only just wearing out the rears now.

takchi 04-24-2017 08:03 AM

It's pretty good but the tires are loud.

bergi85 05-05-2017 01:18 PM

I bought a set of 225/50r16's for mine. I run in BS for SCCA autocross (Last year I ran the RE-71r's).
The Nexens are good, but they aren't on the level of the Bridgestones. I picked up all 4 for $390~ which is a great deal in my opinion. So far I have 2 events (one event I had a co-driver) and a track session on them. They seem to have plenty of grip, they didn't seem to fade with heat either. They seem kinda numb on center but once they are loaded up they grip pretty good. Time will tell how long they last. Last year I had a co-driver for most of the season and the Bridgestones held up for one season of around 20-25 events.

They are about as loud as the worn RE71R I had on before.

I've got a trackday for mine tomorrow. I would agree with the slightly numb on center thing, but when they load up they feel really different... its an on/off switch kind of feeling like I haven't experienced before in a tire.

duffman13 05-06-2017 03:58 AM

Maybe I'm the only one who doesn't think they're loud. They're definitely quieter than Rivals or RS-3s were.

Also, got my alignment on Tuesday and hit the back roads again. Rear grip is very good, even in situations where I was intentionally trying to unsettle the car. I'm probably going to do my first track day of the year in June, so I'll report back then. Obv I'm not going to have any turn-in/steering impressions because rears only, but I like what I'm feeling for response so far.

My only downside is I'm not a huge fan of the look of the tread pattern (stupid, I know).

Another thing to note - if you're around 100k and haven't done your valve adjustment, get it done. My Tuesday maintenance was valves, plugs, and alignment, and the engine feels like I got 15-20hp back and a half second earlier throttle response compared to before.

Chibo 05-06-2017 02:03 PM

Today was my first trackday in the car as I bought it three weeks ago. I can say that I'd happy buy the tires again, but I can't give real feedback about them as it was the first time tracking it so I will just say that they are very predictable, require prodding to break loose and are forgiving. You know when they are going to let go and it is very smooth. Easily able to steer with the rear.

My basic setup is a an AP1 that is stock other than:
17x9 +45 RPF1 square
Offset bushings for more camber up front
Penske DA coilovers
Karcepts front and rear swaybars
DTC-60 / HP+ pads
K&N FIPK
Greddy EMU w/ Karcepts STR base tune

Very, very happy with how well the car works.

THMotorsports 05-16-2017 10:43 AM

I had the sur4 on my GD Slowbaru RS2.5. Just set up a friend with some for his 135i. My impressions on both cars is that the tire behave exactly as R-S3 does. Predictable, easy to drive, cope with heat well. Not the grippiest tire on the market any more, but great for HPDE.

wallofgrath 05-17-2017 08:18 AM

To THMotorsports: Are you speaking of the new SUR4G or the old SUR4? Did you drive fast on tracks and have no issues? I was planning to buy the old SUR4 on clearance from TireRack, but I called Nexen and they told me they had issues with delamination on the old model. And also told me they improved heat dispersion with the SUR4G. Unfortunately the new SUR4G is priced higher than the new Hankook RS4 etc... Thanks for any feedback!!

duffman13 05-18-2017 05:46 AM

So let me get this straight - less than a year old and they already have an updated compound? crazy.

Probably not worth it if it's priced over the RS4 though.

Yeah it's a vert with the top, trunk, and a bunch of sheet metal removed and the trunk was cut and hinges were added to make it into a tailgate. Then we added a nice tonneau cover for aerodynamics.

I had the old Sur4. Slowbaru was mostly autocrossed. No delamination issues there. Sur4 on a full interior, full weight 135i with aero and making somewhere around 500whp, haven't had any chunking or delamination issues yet. We took it to Gingerman and Autobahn so far. I know of one other guy in a S2K running the Sur4, he complained about some edge wear, but no mention of delamination either.

Chibo 05-23-2017 05:06 PM

I've got one trackday on my set, and I have another two this weekend. We shall see.

Edge wear is likely a setup issue given the shape of the treadblocks here.

They are doing great, obviously leaves time on the table compared to something like a RA1.

I've now got about three and a quarter hours of track time and 3000mi on the tires and am probably going to be rotating the rears to the front this weekend. I'll measure tread depth when I do this, but wear is very good and even. I think they are a very good deal for the money.

Chibo 06-02-2017 06:10 PM

Alright, so I measured the rears today at 4.8-5.0mm tread depth remaining. The internets tells me that new tread depth is 9/32" which is 7.14mm.

I have no idea what this level of wear equates to in other tires, but I'd imagine I'm conservatively just under half way through the life of the rear tires. Not bad, in my opinion.

JamesD89 06-05-2017 07:02 AM

Anyone have experience with these and the Federal 595 RS-RR? Trying to settle on a cheap 200tw tire.

Singh_snisen 06-05-2017 08:33 PM

Can't say about the federal. But I have better lap times on the nexan vs the rs3.

wallofgrath 07-24-2017 01:18 PM

UPDATE...

The front Nexen SUR4G tires on my BMW 330Ci lasted only 4 hard track days (roughly 8 hours on track) in hot weather. The rears still have lots of tread. I literally wore off all of the tread - the fronts look like racing slicks now - and I wore one tire down to the cords.

These tires gripped extremely well and I was keeping up with higher horsepower cars. They felt awesome out there. No complaints except that they wore out very quick. Maybe it was my driving, maybe I had a bad habit, too much understeer, not sure... but even to the touch, they felt much softer than my old BFGoodrich Rivals.

I would recommend these if you can get 'em cheap, but if the prices are comparable to the other Extreme Performance summer tires... you might as well get a more proven tire in my opinion.

Haha, that is normal on the E46 chassis, especially without camber plates and a square setup.
