Default Downforce with underbody aero only

I have been meaning to ask this forum about trying to achieve some downforce with underbody aero only, no wings.

I know Ferrari has achieved some great downforce figures on their cars without the use of big wings. I'm wondering if the S2000 could possibly achieve some decent figures, too?

A good front splitter which are readily available for our cars would be a start.

Then the underbody would require some extensive paneling. The only two I know of are from PasswordJDM and M&M Honda.

Seems like there are a lot of options for rear diffusers, too.

Anyone running anything similar or with a similar concept?

I think the center of pressure is too far forward on a S2k largely due to the broad flat hood and rearward passenger compartment “bubble” (things happening on top of the car) to overcome this with underbody aero. I’m no expert, but I imagine the more functional a rear diffuser is, it also makes the rest of the underbody work better by accelerating the air under the car making it unlikely to balance the aero without a wing.

First: what are your objectives and what is your budget.

Note, aero works at speed...fast corner race track speeds. No so much at street speeds. No off the shelf s2k front splitters have diffusers, although add-on diffusers are offered from several sources. There are only two companies who have products, not a lot of users, not a lot of real-world experience.

In those setups...where does the radiator flow exit? There are lots of s2k aero issues. The newest s2k is now 10 years old, ttbomk it isn't dominant in any current racing series and only competitive in a few. Where it is, modifications are heavily restricted.

Lots of folks here go to track days and the modifications are for their personal amusement. They aren't in a competition where other cars have the same restrictions and times are close. A posters few race in NASA in classes with rules and are competitive although the classes are small and the competition often not close.

The open cavity behind the rear axle and the lack of inner fenders at the rear wheels seems to be a source of real lift. Don't know how much but I've filled that area under the car with an attractive rear diffuser. Have no clue if it has any effect but doesn't detract from the cosmetics of the car. When asked I explain it helps keep the car on the road at 140mph.

If budget wasn't an issue you'd be running your 911 GT2 RS with the Porsche Club or Ferrari 488 with the Ferrari Club. Or just meeting your GT3 Cup or Challenge Cup car at the track.

You are talking about obscure and expensive aero issues. All you want to do is drive your daily or occasional street car to the track? Lots of threads here on the minimum modifications with a lot of discussion of safety mods including rollbars, seats, and harnesses. The other big area is brakes where brake cooling, pad selection, and rotor heat capacity are all issues. Lots of people have dealt with aero with both wings and splitters. Then there are tires, suspension mods, and often engine mods; also many threads.

Keep in mind that a safe track car (cage, containment seat) won't be streetable and any track car is subject to total loss at any time from factors not under your control (another car's loss of control, fluids or debris on the track, component failure) or under your control (we all make mistakes).

I think there's something to be said for keeping your street car looking less racy but still playing with aero under the car for fun. I had planned to do nothing but underbody but got side-tracked by a great deal on a chassis-mount wing and went off in the embarrassingly-obvious aero direction instead. Now I'm embarrassed to drive the car unless its to the track! Underbody is still a goal, though. I've been wondering if it's possible to enclose the exhaust under the panels if it is ceramic coated and wrapped first.

There's a simple solution to your problem: just run with no aero.
