Brian,
I don't think that you will benefit from running a 3.9 and short tire unless you run the 22x10-16 R35A (Bias) or 23x9.5-15 R25B (Radial). anything taller, and you lose acceleration.
The 4.57 with a 26.1" Diameter and the 22x10-16 or 23x9.5-15 with a 3.9 are just about identical, so either one will work.

Jason - FYI most of the FP guys are running the 23.5x11x16 radial these days, and it just got re-released in a new compound(R75). Its supposed to be similar to the old R25B, we'll see. Anyway - that's what I'd run if I was doing this myself, or the 23.5x12x16 radial(maybe in the back) if I wasnt worried about the weight penalty for the 12" wheels like Brian doesn't seem to be.
With an AP2 Trans and 3.90's you should be right around where you want to be from a gearing perspective with a 23.5" tire. With the AP1 trans I agree with you, stick with the stock FD.
