Race Camera

The cheapest solution would be to just buy a used camcorder. Something small.
I'm going to use an Aiptek cheapy SD based camcorder I picked up at circuit city with AV input and run a 480 line bullet cam to it mounted on a stickypod suction mount on my rear windshield of the RX8 and trunk lid of the S2000. Should just be able to slap the SD card into a card reader and dump to my laptop at lunch.
So I talked to a guy in Best buy and he recommended a digital cam since the vibration will screw with any type of mechanical recorder, burner and tape recorders. Priced from $500-$600. Should I get a hand cam or race cam? hmmmm
Hmmm...this may be a nice DVR for your setup...

I can tell you right away that HDD and DVD based recorders WILL NOT WORK in the car, with all the vibration you get nothing but errors with those options, on the other hand, I've never experienced such errors with my miniDV camcorder.
Your miniDV recorder will eventually get shaken so much that it goes out of alignment. I had to take mine in twice for service before I decided to keep it in a padded box and have a bullet camera take the vibration. The MiniDV will also have problems with dirty record/playback heads when its exposed regularly to track conditions -- at least, my Elura has.

I tried two different HDD camcorders. Neither would record.
Even after I moved to a bullet cam setup with the mini DV camcorder in a padded case, I kept having to have it serviced at least once or twice a season. I finally just moved to the Chase Cam PDR100. I like the simplicity of the setup and that it is completely solid state. It's also easy now to transfer video by plugging the 4 GB CF card into the laptop to watch video at the track between sessions.

It plays fine on my Linux machine.
MPEG2 is a family of video formats, not a single format.
I just did my first track test session with my PDR100, and I had really bad wind noise showing up in the soundtrack. Since the microphone is internal, I don't really know how to try and address this.
Are you using the internal microphone or do you have an external one plugged in?
