Default The S2000 does not need a rollbar??

Over the last six months since I have owned the S2000, I have seen numerous threads about roll bars. I know the Boxster is not allowed to do track events like drivers ed without a roll bar extender. Nothing like that is available for the S2000.

I just read the Honda S2000 book by Daniel Carney. On page 88 he discusses the design of the Roof and Roll Bar. Honda did extensive testing including replicating NHTSA and IIHS tests for front and side impacts. Additionally they tested roll overs. To provide adequate protection, the windshield A-pillar has been reinforced to act as a forward roll bar along with the hoops which are bolted to the frame rails.

How can we determine if this is adequate?

It depends upon the track, organizers, and the event. Here in Texas it is allowed in most DE and AutoX events, but it not accepted in road course competition with the stock bars.

In most cases it's a question of height rather than how it's mounted. As with the Boxster, it's hard to pass the broomstick rule.

As Chris said, many events will allow you on the track but many will not (Trackmasters for example) simply because the driver's head extends higher than the hoops. I'm only 5'7 1/4" (OK, I have a height complex) and sitting in the stock seat with helmet my head is higher than the hoops. It doen't matter how good the existing hoops and windshield frame are if your head beats them to the pavement.

Boxster owners commonly use an hoop extension to get into PCA and other events. Due to the plastic shroud that surrounds our bars the task would be quite daunting for the S2000.

I will be checking with some fabricators in the DC area in the next few days.

BTW--BSR, Inc. (the FATT people at Summit Point) have no problems with the S2000 running as is although other events held there may not have the same policy (again, Trackmasters).

The broomstick rule is based on the concept that the windshield is not a roll bar. If the S2000 book is correct, the frame of the window will support the car and a bigger roll bar is not required.

Gregg,

If you get a line on something that works, I'd be interested (as long as I didn't have to bring my s2k to DC to get it).

I like where this thread is going!!!
My track events are with BMW CCA and Trackmasters.
I will be running with the hardtop option and have always thought between the hardtop and the OEM roll hoops the car should be fine.
Like others mentioned, it is all up to the specific governing body.
I'll see what I can dig up from Track Time like hecash mentioned.
This may not help with those involved with SCCA but it might encourage others to nag there organizers.
And anybody who finds a good fabricator who wants to go into production, let us all know!
