hey guys, quick question, i went to the track this weekend, and did about three or four sessions at williow springs. today i looked my tires and noticed that on the rear right tire only, that portions of the "7's" (the seven shaped tread pattern for lack of better discription) of my s02's are chunking off all the way around. my car i only 4 months old, and the tires have 90% tread. what gives? can some of you track experst explain why or what i did to cause this?

It's pretty normal for street tires to chunk off at the track. Here are my basically new S-02's after 2 days on Sears Point (Infinion).

You can even still see the colored markings on the tread. I'm not kidding when I said they were new. Needless to say that was my last set of S-02s. I'm running shaved Toyo RA1s now and life is good.

A street tire is way more prone to chunking when the tread blocks are big; therefore a new tire is much more prone to this. I have seen the outer edges of a track tire chunk, but they were not heat cycled, not shaved and the first time they were used, they were abused. There really is nothing to be worried about unless the chunking goes all the way down to the threads/cords of the tire.

If you call Vilven, ask for Mike or Bob.

Guys, can the RA1's work as a street tire - like a daily driving tire? I want them, but don't have an extra set of rims.

edit - btw, I do about 6-7 track events/yr, some are 2 day events.

In Florida I'd say no due to rain. In SoCal I'd say yes for the same reason. A good RA1 is a shaved and bald RA1, they suck with tread.

Take a look at the Yokohama 032R's. I don't know if they make them in s2k size, and they are loud, but they are the best DOT track tire in the rain that I have found so far. Much better than the RA1's in the rain, and they won't chunk at the track. They're not as good as the RA1's in the dry, but IMHO if you only have one set of wheels and you're driving the car hard enough to chunk the S02's, the 032R's are te tires to go with.
