Default Track glossary/terminology question

What's the green stuff in corner exit area that spits you back onto the track called, and what is it made out of?

What's the correct term for what some call a "gator?"

I don't know where you track but the green stuff at corner exit is normally called grass and when it is wet it has a physics defying coefficient of friction and it rarely spits you back on track. Are you talking about the stuff at F1 tracks that is placed to stop the F1 cars from using the track on the other side of the curb and the green stuff? I think it is similar to astroturf. I wouldn't call it a gator either. A gator is a form of track exit curbing that looks like the back/tail of an alligator instead of being a smooth curb it is cut at an angle and has nothing to do with the color.

You've been to VIR? I'm talking about the stuff coming out of turn 3 and Oak Tree.

Stuff I'm talking about can be seen here past turn 3: http://www.roadracingworld.com/RFS/2...a.jpg?size=630

Had someone last night tell me the technical/official name for a "gator" is simply kerbing or curbing.

I can definitely say from experience that it seems to have a much higher adhesion level than the track surface.

Cannot get much more specific than this...

Apparently, VIR is installing the same system soon...complete with "Kerbing."

Regarding the exits of T3 and T12 at VIR specifically, the green painted surface is actually “circuit paint”. Think of it as paint with sand mixed in to increase traction. In many cases it’s colored to indicate whether it’s just regular paint (that gets slick in the wet) or a special product.

They should hire us to put fish-eyes in the paint. They have better traction than sand ;-)
