I test drove them both at just shy of their limits. In my opinion, as far as power, the S felt a bit faster. Vtec probably being responsible for the extra umph in the upper range. However, thats not to say the 8 felt slower, but rather not as fast. I was very impressed with throttle response, and a familiar 9000 rev climb also helped in that aspect. But what really earned my respect for the 8 was in the handling category. The S more or less met my expectations of its benchmark status as a roadholder, but the 8 was certainly a surprise. It truly held its own on the corners equally, if not better due to its lsd, than the S. Both are a joy to drive and truly an enthusiast's car. Mazda has honestly done a superb job with their new 8's inside and out(well expect for the "praying mantis" like styling). In the end, I still have my eyes set on the s2k for the sheer fact of my love for hondas....

and about the 350z, I agree that its a drivers race...while yes they have much more torque, 240hp pulling 2780lbs and 280hp pulling 3300lbs...the S has the advantage if the driver could get the better launch

The rx-8 is not a race car.
The rx-8 is nice sedan and thats all it is.
I have an 04s, and i eat the rx8 like tic-tacs.
The rx7 is a different story, one of the sales guy at mazda said the new rx7 is coming in 06.
FYI: I test drove the rx8 before i bought my s and my 93 delsol felt faster then the rx8.

I've seen a pic, or at least it was supposed to be a pic of the new 7...looks very similar to the RX8 without the rear seats part, so its shorter, and also slightly more agressive lines
