Default I just got worked by my buddy's chipped S4

Wow....I must give respect where it is due.

My friend has a 2001 6 spd S4 (GIAC X-chip, borla exhaust...I think)...that just worked me off the line, and more surprisingly...on the freeway as well.

I have really never had a problem (especially on the freeway) staying right with stock S4's....but this S4 is a beast.

Anyways...just wondering if any of you guys have had similar experiences with chipped S4's or the e46 M3's out there....

Cheers...

Any Stage I (chip) or Stage II (chip and exhaust) S4 will beat a stock, or mostly stock S2000. APR, X-Chip, any of them do wonders for the car. The e46 M3 is in a class of it's own, can't compare it to a Stage I or II S4 nor a non-FI S2000.

Chipped + Exhaust + Downpipe S4s are doing high 12s/low 13s. My friend does 13 flat all day.

There are Chipped S4s that are beating E46 M3s.

chipped+downpipe+exhaust+etc could beat a stock E46 M3, but give the E46 M3 similar mods and then compare.....

Except M3s are N/A and already producing over 100 hp per liter .. you'd be lucky to see 5 real world HP with those mods.

i agree that the m3 will not respond nearly as well to the same s4 mods, but you brought up a good pt. throw in a bi turbo into a e46 m3 and then compare

This is sort of true. The factory is said to be preparing a CSL with a small bump to 350 DIN hp, which will be about ~340 for us.

The only place left to go for the E46 M3 motor is more revs. A European tuner is making 400 DIN hp from an M3, but by using a custom crank and revised cams w/software.

Good point, but then your talking a 70+ thousand dollar M3(just a guess, but probably not far off).....

Phunball-

I agree. Putting a turbo WILL put it into the 60-70 range, however, i would never do such a thing. The E46 M3 is more than fast enough for me (if i had it), and is a great track car. For 60-70k I would wait for the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VII, thus keeping my E36 and putting my savings to work.

As the owner of a e46 M3 and a previous owner of a chipped S4 there are things that you guys have missed.....

#1 The S4 performance is seriously degraded when it is over 80+ degrees. It plummets over 95 degrees or so. I live in Dallas and even with the chip, the car was not that fast in the summer. It is a fabulous car to mod (there are S4's running 11's with 480 hp as daily drivers) but it comes at a big price. Audi is not exactly "happy" to deal with customers who have chipped their cars. Some will do the work but if you blow a set of turbos...... $7000 to fix them. Yep. They have to pull the whole engine to replace them.

As to the e46 M3.... To get an S4 to compete with or potentially beat an M3 in a straightline race you would have to be at least a Stage 2 (chip, and cat back exhaust= 315-320 hp and 350 ft/lbs torque) or Stage 2+(chip, cat back exhaust and downpipes= 330-350hp and 385 ft/lbs torque) . Downpipes are the exhaust pipes from the turbo to the cats and there is almost a 35-40 hp gain by adding them.

The quattro traction will always get the jump on a RWD car so a drag race is where the S4 will shine. The downside is that the S4 is a couple of hundred lbs heavier.

The M3's engine is at 11.5 :1 compression ratio which means that it is so highly strung that adding a turbo or S/C would have drastic effects on the reliability of the car. Currently there is NO TURBO OR S/C available for the e46 M3. There are prototypes but not a generally available application. Dinan is the ONLY tuner who has the ability to keep the BMW wtty intact. He is STILL working on a S/C mod for the car. Supposedly, they can get about 110 hp or so out of the car. (Just think.... a 443hp M3?!?!?!?!) Anyway, I am waiting on news of one and will purchase it as long as the $$$ and reliability are in check. The other mods available currently are very very expensive..... Hamann lists the exhaust at $2500= 12 hp. Exhaust, Intake and chip are $7200 = about 45 hp and the top of the hill is Exhaust, Intake, Chip, new manifold and replacing the cats with racing cats which totals $12,500 = 405++ hp. They haven't got the car on the dyno yet and I am awaiting results. The only other tuner to claim north of 400 hp on the M3 is Nowak out of Germany with a revised set of cams and some other goodies.

Anyway... that is my $.02....
