I'm in a lucky position where I've got an S2k and a Z4M coupe. Both very different cars. TBH I get more fun from the S2000. But the E46 engine is in another league. The coupe is super stiff(stiffest in class) and drives like a sharp precision tool but it doesn't suit some of our B roads or my commute. I used to have an E46 M3 before that and that's what made me buy the Z4M. I've had it since it was 3 months old and have done several hoons with it.

Both very good cars. However I'd also like to add a Z3M coupe, that would be my dream garage..
Yep, me too... I'm lucky enough to have a Z4M Coupe and a Westfield for weekends and track days and an S2000 as a daily driver. I love it - you can't beat driving to work with the roof down

I've had my Z4MC for six years now and I've significantly modified it for track use. As such, my S is far more pleasant to drive on the road (painted road markings break my teeth in the Zed ) and is probably faster over poor tarmac on country lanes. Side by side in a drag race or round a track my Zed in it's current form would eat the S for breakfast. Unmodified, the Zed had a propensity to understeer on the track so the S might corner at least as fast on decent rubber.

I've gone head to head with E46 M3s on many track days and the only one that could keep up with my Zed had a Stage I ESS supercharger running around 450hp. The M3 is fast in a straight line but wallows a bit in the corners and seems not to change direction as readily as the Zed - perhaps due to the longer wheel base and extra weight. I suspect that a well-driven S on a back road or track might leave an M3 behind at least until the straight bits!

I was looking at Z3M Coupes before I bought my S but they were either dogs or greatly overpriced. That seems to be a trend that is increasing.

I have both s2000 and e46 m3 coupe. The m3 is considerably faster and generally a much better car. Yes they are totally different, but tbh the only time I really use the s2000 is when I want to have the roof down or it's been so long that I forgot how nice the k&n fipk sounds

I thought id chime in since I had a rather rare run in with a z3 M3 hatch on the freeway in my now N/A but modded s2k. We played around on a few pulls from 60-100mph and it was a dead heat at that range. I was a little surprised, but my car does pull pretty good for N/A with few things ive done. He may have started to get me over 100mph where im fighting wind/top down and a little short on hp, not sure. Those are cool cars. The z4 version too. Dont see too many around.

I'm sure it was an early model with the 240 HP S50 and not the 333 HP S54.

The early UK Z3M Coupe had the S50 engine, making around 321bhp. In the US, the early ones used the S52 engine (from the US E36 M3) which was significantly down on power at 240bhp (IIRC due to emmisions issues).
The final models worldwide used the S54 engine from the E46 M3 and later found in the Z4M. This made 325bhp (Europe) / 315bhp (USA) in the Z3M, a little down on the output in the M3 and Z4M.
