Spent some time driving a S660 in Japan, I'd buy it as-is if they brought it here. Feels like a baby S2000, makes fun turbo noises, is pretty decent interior wise, dash / steering wheel is neat, chassis is composed and fun to drive.

The earliest and later Miata is a perfect example of a modern sports car. So is the S2000. An MGA or MGB is not. Neither is a TR3,4, 7, etc, nor an E Type Jag. etc. A Lotus Elan is not, an Elise is. C1 and C2 Corvettes are not, later C4's and newer are. And so on and so forth....and so on and so forth.... Let's not beat this subject to a pulp. If Honda wanted to build an even more modern sports car than the S2000, they'd know what to do. They'd also know their target audience. Whether Honda chooses to do so- quien sabe?
Full disclosure: I'd never own an SUV and never considered Camaros or Mustangs "sports cars." Neither is the Grand National. and so on ....

Putting it into other words, a modern sports car is generally reliable, comes with two seats, a heater that actually works, and maybe even air conditioning. But that's an oversimplification and not entirely consistent with what I previously said.

Have fun out there, and look down the road.
I think you and GunthNW both make good points. 99MCoupe, I smiled when you said that you'd never own an suv. I view them the same way I viewed station wagons in the '70's (admittedly more capable station wagons) and they have the added annoyance of always blinding me with their lights, night AND day! I have no plans to ever own one, either. But suv's and trucks have taken a huge bite out of the entire market for cars, though I suspect that the pendulum will eventually swing back more evenly between cars and suv's/trucks. Credit Mazda continuing with the Miata and Toyota/BMW bringing the Supra to market. It probably makes little sense for Honda to resurrect the S2000 unless sports cars enjoy a huge resurgence in popularity.

Jeffrey,
The closest I'll ever come to an SUV is our DD, a restored 1993 E34 Touring.
Unfortunately, Honda is going through a bit of a rough patch lately. Porsche, on the other hand, seems to be doing quite well.

They hardly make cars anymore. No one wants a car anymore. Yet, is the market for a 2019 S2000 really any different than it was back in 2000?

It was always for a select few. If a 2019 version had the right formula, all the original fans would still be fans. Just because the rest of the public has moved on to SUVs doesn't mean those that were tbe original cars market have.

Sure, not everyone that is or was a fan is in a position to actually buy a 2019. But I don't think it makes sense to compare sedan sales moving to SUVs to potential sportscar market.

That's interesting to think about. I've lost count of how many stories I've heard where the previous owner was no longer able to enjoy their S2000 due to health issues brought on by age, or worst case scenario: death. There has definitely been some attrition when it comes to the original fans. While there have been more than enough willing buyers for S2000's in the used car market (at least at the prices these cars have been selling for up until now), I'm just not sure how many takers there would be at say $45K (maybe more?) for a new version of the car. Fewer sports car fans combined with higher new car prices just don't mix all that well. The dwindling sales figures for the Miata are probably the best indicator of how the sports car market is faring these days.

The s660 is so cute but dang my Sienna is faster. Okay but maybe not on canyons. I agree with Popeye it needs at least 1 liter.

What's your point? Probably no one wants to admit this, but you know a Prius would smoke us off the line, right?

Yes I know! but seriously 10 seconds to get to 60 is no fun at all? I would be scared getting on a freeway on ramp.

I will tell you right now that it does not feel that slow and it had no problems in traffic between 60-75mph. I don't know what they make with a tune / boost turned up a bit, but I am sure it helps a lot.

I enjoyed it more than the R33 and R34 GTRs that I rented, but I have never been a power car person.
