Alarming noise from the engine
Hi all!
I have a new S2000 '03. No VTEC until 600 miles. Then VTEC'ed to about 7,000 rpm's 3 times until 700 miles and up to 8,000 until 750 miles. With 750 miles on the clock, I went for a drive. After VTEC'ing to 8,500 rpms a few times, and having just VTEC'ed in 3rd gear and changed to fourth, a strange clearly heard loud hissing noise with a bit of a whirr appeared, coming from the engine. I think I was at 6,000 rpm's. It must have been from the engine, because it was coming from the front of the middle of the dash. I also got the feeling that the car was less responsive to the throttle for a moment, but I am not sure. The noise stopped immediately, when I slowed down and dropped the revs. After that I only revved up to 5,000 rpms and the car was fine without any noise at all. I had checked the oil before and I also checked it after the event and there was plenty (one X below high on both sides of the dipstick).
Anybody has a clue of what it could be, and what I should do?
Thanks.

the hissing noise could've came from a loose vacuum line, if the whirr came from the rear...i would guess the differential is about to go. without hearing it in person, i can't really tell you what it is. since its under warranty, take it to the stealership and have them check for any loose hoses and expalin to them what happened.

Actually I have now made an attempt to reproduce it. If I drive casually no problems. If I rev high (8000 rpms) for two or three times then the noise comes after I change to higher gear and the revs drop between 5000 and 6000. It needs to be revved a few times first before the noise comes. It is a complicated noise. It is a bzzzzzzzzzzzzz with a backgound hissing and on top of these there is a metallic cringing noise. It all comes from the front, exactly where the engine lies. As the engine lies far back, in front of the middle of the dash, it sounds as if the whole dash is about to explode. If I drop the revs below 5000 it goes away. Then it does not come back, unless I rev again high and then shift again to higher gear. I wonder if it is the well-known clutch problem. Could this appear so early in the life of the vehicle?
It won't be easy to reproduce it with the dealer. I will have to get the mechanic in the car and scare the hell out of him a couple of times before the noise comes.

The MY2003's aren't "supposed" to have a problem with the clutch buzzing. To answer your question: my MY2001 was buzzing as I drove it off the lot when I picked it up, brand new. I did get the clutch replaced, but not until I had about 17,000 miles on it. It was so loud, I couldn't stand the noise any longer. Mine was buzzing on deceleration from around 4000 rpm down, mainly in the lower three gears. Your problem doesn't sound like the classic clutch buzzing to me.
Good luck,
Bob
