Break In
 

Hey all, :hello:

I just wanted to ask a questions about the supposed break in period. I have heard different things from both people at honda dealerships that I have been to. One guy said 1000 mile break in period try not to go over the 6k rpm mark. The other guy told me you can drive it over the 6k and dont worry about the break in period.

My question then is this, is there a break in period ? and if yes what is it ? Lastly will it really effect my cars performance in anyway. I love the car and I am picking it up tommorrow just want some feedback from you guys to make sure I break it in correctly.I would hate to not do it right and mess the car up :banghead: Any help would be much appreciated.

Owner's manual says break-in period is 600 miles. I go by what's in print. Read the owner's manual. That's the best advice everyone on this forum gave me. My car is just 3 months old now.

Break in period is 600 miles. Keep it below 6k. Not all people follow this, but it is what's suggested in the manual.

Drive it like you stole it.!!!

Anyone notice a difference after the 600 mile mark ?. Difference in power or anything?

I have no problem following the manual , its probably best anyways.

I stayed out of VTEC for the first 600 miles (save for a couple times).

The car was about the same from 600 miles to about 1500. At 1500, it felt like the car got quicker as everything broke-in. Even the engine feels a lot smoother now than when I first bought it (had 10 miles on the car).

When you bought your new car, it came with an owner's manual. I strongly suggest that you read it. Not only does it explain the "break in" period and what you should/should-not do during the break in period, it also contains a lot of other useful information about your new car. This suggestion is not specific to the S2000, any new car you buy in the future will also have its own manual with detailed information about it.

There is nothing magical about the 600 mile break in for the S2000, it will not suddenly have more power after the 600 mile mark is reached. Nor will it behave any differently. The 600 mile break in is just a guide for you to allow the engine (and other parts of the drive-train) to "settle down". But it is your car and you can do whatever you want with it. I just got mine S 2006 and I am following the owner's manual of 600 miles break in period, checking the oil, and not reving the car above 5500rpm. I have been shifting around 4000-4500rpm just to be on the safe side. Currently, approx. 525 miles on the car.

I strongly suggest that you read the OWNER's MANUAL from cover to cover. It will include all sorts of information (this one about break-in, for example). This may help you to understand your car much better and avoid having to wonder about something like this in future.
That 600 miles thing is merely a precautionary, common sense sort of advisory. I'm sure Honda knew what they were doing when they put that in the owner's manual.
