CARFAX History Impact ? ..GUIDANCE PLEASE!

jdm has it right. That is why I personally inspect potential car purchases. I have a good eye for paint work. And a great instinct for mechanical condition, based on my own mechanical repair back ground. I have been fortunate so far, and haven't been burned.

Agree w/ several of the posts above, given what you are looking for why are you so concerned about re-sale? Buy the best low mileage car you can find and drive it until the wheels fall off. If you read the forums you will notice S2000 owners love their car and to be biased there is not another car on the market better in "smiles per mile". I am still amazed at the number of low mileage S2000's available, cars.com shows over 50 w/ under 10,000 miles.

for me it wasnt all about the low mileage per say on the s2000. i just want to find a well maintained car that will last me atleast 4 years. whether it has a 100k or 50k doesnt matter. Someone told me that he had driven a really well maintained car with 150k vs a lady driven car with 30k and the 150k car drove better. i guess it just depends on the car. im going to go look at a 03 s2k later today with around 100k miles, but no accidents and 2 owners instead of 4 ... ill keep you guys posted on the search. i agree the carfax isn't the best tool sometimes but for an inexperienced manual driver it means more to me. i know how to drive a stick fine but i have never owned a manual car yet. and its not that I am concerned for the resale just yet, i just have to consider all the factors when buying a car after all. Its also nice to take a retired mechanic with me to help me check out the car. Great neighbors!

Even though a Carfax is not the end-all (a test drive and inspection are), it can be used as a bargaining tool. I was able to talk down the seller of my car because Carfax detected an accident that was not on the report that he got from the place he bought from (Carmax). He was pretty upset that it had been in an accident and they didn't catch it. At any rate, I was able to get the price down quite a bit because the Carfax said the car was worth appx. $1200 less than one that hadn't been in an accident. I used the logic that when I try to sell the car the next buyer will see the same thing and I need to factor that into my purchase price.

Mine was previously in an accident and was rehabbed by the top autobody shop in the area.
It is perfect in every way, and I have no regrets.
Consumer Reports says Carfax isn't the be-all-end-all too.
Good luck.
