-I like the way the clutch felt, not as spongy with better grab without the delay valve
-This engine can stay in vtec after you upshift from the previous gear. The 04 comes out of vtec (below 6k rpm's) when you shift through 2nd and 3rd gear( I believe). The secret to driving the s fast is to stay in vtec, and you cant do that with the f22c.
Ok, this has got me worried. I like to drive somewhat hard and I am afraid I might be P!SSED if I drop out of VTEC. Has anyone dropped the VTEC engagement point with the 04+? If I was dropping out of VTEC when upshifting, I know that I would end up doing that. Is it a very difficult thing to do?

I've never dropped out of VTEC when shifting properly at redline.

The only reason you might is due to the stupid delay valve they introduced on the '04+. There is a mod. available to remove this, though. I'll be doing it eventually...

Yep! I'll be doing the same thing for sure. XV posted "how to" do this just couple of weeks back, you can check it as well( if you not already know that).

About shifting, it has a lot to do with how and when you floor it. For example, if you not floor the pedal, it will fall out of range in the next gear. To make sure you got the best result, shift after the 3rd blink of your techo'. Even gear calculation indicate that the rave range is fall out of VTEC, the ECU knows and still keep the car running on the high cam as long as you keep full throttle. Plus, delay valve will help engage the clutch after you back on throttle to make sure that you bring the RPM back for it.

I don't know if modify the delay valve will interrupt this process, nor I do know what is the main thing in this process to keep you in VTEC range, ECU, or delay valve, but that and slow steering are sure annoy the heck out of me. Never heard anyone who does this mod and complain about it, though, that or may be I have to learn to blip a little harder between shift.

The delay valve was introduced to reduce transmission wear, and allow the clutch to take the brunt of the force. But I hate how it engages this way.

the 04 does not fall out of vtec. if so it is driver fault. watch how to launch a 04 s2k. https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=259009

It looks like I may be wrong about the car going out of vtec on an upshift. I guess I may be used to reving and shifting the easier f22C. I may have to wait till the spring to try some intense shifting. Letting the rev limiter blink three times does not sound like something I want to do on a daily basis. But if this works, I will know how to get the most out of the cars power band when I need it. I am also going to look into removing the clutch delay valve.

RM, that's interesting about the ECU's behavior. I hadn't heard that before. Are you making that up, or did you read it somewhere? What you're saying seems possible, but I really don't think someone should have to engage the rev limiter for a while in order to keep the car in VTEC while upshifting.

I'm just curious -- I don't have an '04, but this piqued my interest.

There was a lengthly post last year around Dec., when MY04 start to hit the ground and have some feed back on this site.

Back then, lots of post bashing, how un-pure MY04 is. People were curious 'cause they use gear calculation and the number turns out that MY04 fall out of VTEC range, and some people that wanted to trade up like to know as well. There's one member, I remember, went out to drive right a way, hit the VTEC, and come back to confirm, and someone with technical info said about how ECU works, I also learnt about delay valve from that post.

I got a chance to hit VTEC couple of weeks ago when it was nice out, same procedure as I did with MY03, "MY04 WILL NOT FALL OUT OF VTEC!"

BTW: It was the one that has the very first MY04 DYNO sheet posted, anybody remember who?

I'm assuming you 04' guys are exaggerating the torquelessness of the f20c in the form of a joke...

If not, i personally find that i leave traffic behind fairly easily just by leaving the lights normally. The soccer moms aint got nuthin' on me
