Default CR premium over non-CR?

Hi,

I am in the market for a '08-'09 S2000. My preference would be to find a clean CR, but prices are all over the map.

What kind of premium would you recommend is the right level for the CR over regular S2000s (all else equal - i.e. same mileage, same condition, etc.)? For example, if a clean '08 S2000 with 20K miles is going for $28K, what would be the fair price for a clean '08 CR with 20K miles?

Also, in the long run, would the CR hold its value more?

Thanks!

My advice is to skip the CR entirely and get an S2000 with a soft top. You'll enjoy it a lot more.

The CR may retain value merely due to low production numbers, but there are still 700-800 of them. Honda's failed attempt at a racing class. Something dominated by old, used Miatas.

The car holds an attraction for a very small population. I'm not one of those. It is not a convertible but pure open or closed car. A binary position. I wanted an open car with the ability to close the roof in 6 seconds as needed.

Buying fairly common cars based on projected future value doesn't make sense to me. Buy what you like and drive it. The truly rare collectors cars are treated like objets d'art, not driveable cars. This is probably why I see no value in paintings. Seen it? Yep. Next.

The cost variation if CR's is entirely down the condition of the car (color plays a bigger part here than on non CR's as well). There is multiple CR's out there with checked pasts given there is so few you see much more variation car to car since there isn't that many for sale at any given time. That said the CR does offer a lot of improvements over the non CR S2000. It is sort of a best of in terms of how it drives. CR's do feel stiffer and sharper than a stock standard S2000. A clean 08 CR with 20k miles would easily fetch $32-35k maybe more depending on color.

Now weather that is worth it to you is a different question. As others have said having the soft top is nice if you like driving the car with the top down. There is also usually more cars to choose from (though if you only want 08-09 probably not many more) and in more colors. If you are after a car to drive and enjoy (and modify) I would widen your search to 06-09 with low miles. You'll have more choices and likely pay less. The CR would be a car to be more careful with as it would hold its value or increase in value since it is closer to being an actual collectors car.

Indeed. For a non investment, you would want to live in a nice weather state, the southwest. You can go for some nice day drives but you really cannot get too far from the hard top you left behind.

I can tell you I agree with others that the very fast top the S has is a real plus. Most of the time I am top down but on some freeways and in inclement weather < 30mph it is a fast snap to put it up.

Low mileage original Deletes with no accident/repaint are bringing in the low to mid 40's. The most diserable being the GPW delete, followed by the ABP.
