Default Developing my own CAI

Hey guys my friend and I are gonna make my own CAI cause he can get the mandrel bent piping and weld the pieces together himself. Anyways we were gonna run the cai piping just to the bottom of the car and cut out the bottom plastic piece at the bottom of the car. We are gonna shield the filter from disturbances from the fan in the engine bay and hope fully shield water from entering the filter at the bottom of the car too. So in essence the piping will come out from the throttle body angle directly down and to the bottom of the car. So what do you all think? Also we can get the transition hoses too, anyone know the diameter of the stock throttle body?

KYS2000,

is this custom CAI just for your car, or are you going to mass produce some units??? how cheap are we talking about here for the CAI? I am sure a lot of people would be interested if the price was right.. you can get USED AEM CAI between $150-170. So I think this has to be atleast under $100 for people to be interested.

I'm thinking that air where your pickup will be is probably very dirty from the turbulence under there. Your filter will need a lot of maintenance if it's down there.

I've had several discussions about this before, and while CAI's do gain in performance, everyone fails to see the "stock" setup for this car. It is *the best* version of a CAI for any car. Ever see where the intakes are on other cars? Look carefully, and you'll see what I mean.

I think its a great idea to make your own, I dont think you can go too wrong on it. MG Racing's CAI is like the one you describe, which grabs air from underneath the car.

i shielded the intake system from the engine and radiator heat by aluminum sheeting. works great to insulate the intake. if my digital thermometer werent lying to me, temperature on the filter element stays 2-5 degree F above ambient temperature and 10-20 degrees F above ambient temp at idle. i couldnt feel any performance gain with my butt dyno though.

Bayarea i'm not planning the make it for sale just for usage, and yes it should be under 100 hopefully cause i will just need about 3 piece of mandrel piping, a transition hose, and clamps, plus other miscellaneous. Zamboni, my friend isn't a professional but he's a mechanical engineer, we are just bored and would like to see what we can do. Xviper, you are right, that leads me on to the next thread, we will build a shielding for the filter at the bottom of the car, to shield from turbulence from the engine fan and from getting water in to the filter while trying to allow for enough air to get to the filter. Once we find some time to get started we will start. Thanks for the replies guys. You all are great S2kI 4 life

You would be better off to just put a duct in the front bumper and run a hose to channel the air into the intake box.

So basically keithD, just like the spoon and mugen ones? Have those been proven to produce more power? if so, as much as the injen or AEM ?

Stock airbox on our car is pretty damned good. I think as long as you get cold air to it, the max power will come out of the stock box. Maybe throw a less restrctive filter on it. Anytime you stick a metal pipe in place of a rubber one your going to get more heat transfer. Honda pretty much didnt compromise much on the car, I would think they probably knew what they were doing with our intake.

Personally I have a BYS Intake plate, with a scoop in my air dam. It works well. I did a little write up on it if you do a search. This weekend I finally got my hose and completed it.
