Does this happen to you guys too?

I just bought a Suzuka blue 05 s2k about a month ago. I love the car to pieces! everything about it is amazing.

However it’s not the car itself that I love, but the community involved with it. I’m in San Diego, and everytime another s2k passes by, we either flash each other or wave. I’ve never really experienced something like that, so seeing all these owners makes me feel more special. I feel like we’re acknowledging each other because these cars are discontinued and we are the last few lol.

Whenever you guys are driving around and pass another S, do you ever acknowledge them? Just curious.

Yep, SF here.

I only wave to people who haven't absolutely ruined their S2000 though. Bone stock, tastefully modded..

I've never seen another S2000 since I bought mine nearly 6 months ago. There's only 4 in the region, which is 5,500 square miles, so the odds aren't fantastic, but yeah I'll no doubt wave slightly too enthusiastically if I ever see another one.

JasonMG 04-22-2019 02:56 PM

They are very rare here as well. If I see one, there is much waving.

I also drive a Jeep. There's much waving.

I also drive a motorcycle. There's much waving.

I also drive an Audi A4. It's relaxing.

It happened to me today and I have to admit it was kind of an emotional moment. I was just driving it back from the dealership where they informed me that I need major work to the clutch and transmission. The work would be so expensive that I'm in the process of deciding whether I can keep the car or not. Just then, someone in an S2000 waves to me and I remember full well why I love the car.

I really wanted to catch up to him and ask him if he knew a good mechanic, but the light took too long.

You guys should check out your respective regional forums elsewhere on this site if you have not already done so. It is a good way to become more tied in with your local S2000 community and learn more about resources near you that are recommended by others.

Yes to the wave experience here as well. Not quite as common as when riding a motorcycle though.

Not many S2000's here but the Miata guy's are wave happy, I just ignore them! :drive:

darcyw 04-22-2019 05:35 PM

there's maybe 3 in my home town owned by people I don't know- I wave at them when I'm in the civic, or the mazda5. They don't wave back :(

I wave. They wave back.

It's a daily thing here.

I always see other S when I'm not in the S. I wave, they look at me awkwardly. Fun times

RolanTHUNDER 04-23-2019 02:45 AM

Oh yeah I definitely wave enthusiastically or honk my horn, flash my lights if need be. It's a great feeling to see another S2K bro (or sis). Thing is our cars are quite rare pretty much anywhere in the world so often times I'm the only S2000 on the road as far as the eye can see.

I also get thumbs up from miata and frs owners.

Typically I notice most of us do wave when we see each other. I live in the Minneapolis/St Paul area. I also get lots of attention from lots of people when in it :P Being yellow with black wheels, it does look like a hotwheels toy so that is expected I guess. Kids LOVE it :) They always yell, wave, etc when they see it.

Another group that typically gives a nod, wave, etc are people on sport bikes. I guess the S2k is kinda like a sportbike with 4 wheels in some ways, with the low tq, high revving motor so maybe that is it.

And of course, I do get the ricers who think they need to impress me with their stanced civic, moms volvo (yep, had a kid trying to start a street race with me in a stock volvo), etc that like to rev, try to start a race, or just basically do a ricer flyby when the see me driving down the road. I typically just totally ignore them and do not even look at them. That is kinda annoying, but I guess to be expected lol.

Car Analogy 04-23-2019 11:20 AM

Yeah, I get respect shown from sportbike crowd as well (a group I used to belong to). Its like a dog that can just sense another dog he meets for the first time is actually related to him. Somehow they know.

I three season dd my S. In an average week I see exactly zero other S driving around. Maybe see another one once a month. Maybe. So enthusiastic recognition soon follows.

PS - For the pedantic among us, the zero comment was meant to be hyperbole. Once/month does not average out to zero/week...

tiger1964 04-24-2019 05:32 AM

Nope, not here in Self-Involved Land (Washington DC area).

When I got my Miata in 2000, I read about all of this waving thing. Since then, in the Miata, then the S2000, and now the Boxster, if I see someone and wave first, I get a response 25% of the time. If I don't wave first, it drops to 0% of the time.

jts09 04-26-2019 07:09 PM

It must be a sports car thing. I've seen the same thing with my RX-7's, my RX-8 and now my S.

I read that the practice can be traced to MG owners after WWII, when they were (relatively) rare on the roads.
