Default Does your gas cap loosen itself?

My MY'02 now has about 12,000 miles on it. I've had about 3 times now where the gas cap has come loose, causing the check engine light to come on. I know that I am absolutely anal about tightening it more than 3 clicks at every fill-up.

Does anyone else have this problem of the gas cap coming loose by itself?

i started to smell fuel from my car yesterday and checked the fuel cap. lo and behold the bitch was loose. i tightened it and every thing was good. it must have been the lady gas attendant in connecticut that didn't "tighten" it. oh well.

This is a known issue. Honda will replace the cap.

It time stamps based upon what webserver you're attached to. The one I was attached to had an earlier time than the one originally posted on. If you look at the times our posts are listed as, yours is 9:42 and mine is 9:40. So when it creates the page it puts mine ahead of yours. I posted the issue in site info and Rylan took care of it.

It happened to me a couple of times.... now when I put the gas cap on, I grab the WHOLE cap and twist it till I think it's tight.. then use the twisty thing to get my 3 clicks.

In MY 2002 there was a bunch of bad gas caps. If you are having problems the Honda dealer should replace it no charge, no problem.

What happens is when you tighten the cap, it gets hung up and starts to ratchet like it is tight, however it is nowhere close to being seated properly. Often this will loosen and/or give a check engine light.

If you grip the sides of the cap and tighten slowly you can get the cap over the area where it hands up and then be able to screw in all the way on.

For more info try the search feature, this is a well-documented issue.
