First car at age 23
There's this guy I work with in the same office and he's in the market for his very first car.
I give him rides in my car quite often and of course he loooooves my car.
Yes, so do I.
He's been in the states for almost 3 yrs, age of 23 w/ very limited driving experience.
he wants to get a used S for his first car.
I've suggested him a few different cars that can be reliable, safer for beginners, and also can be very fun to drive (i.e. 2ZZ celicas, RSX-S, etc), but he always comes back to S. But from my personal experience, it will be much safer for the beginners to start with a FWD. My first car was RWD and it only lasted 2 months til I went side ways into the center divider on the freeway. I wasn't speeding or doing any kind of stunts at the time. Just casual driving along with other cars during the rush hour, in the wet. I believe the lack of experience was the cause of the accident.
Sure, he can take it real easy for the first ..however long,
but that ONE incident, is where your experience comes in to play and I think that is very important.
I know a lot of you here were fortunate enough to have S as your first car
and enjoying the ownership of owning one of the finest machine,
but I'd like to hear what everyone has to say.
Honestly, I've learnt a lot from owning and tossing around numerous FWD sports cars before I jumped into S, but that was mainly because of my financial situations at the time. After so many years, now S being more on the affordable price range by many, Im trying not to be the one discouraging him based on my personal experiences.

If he has his heart set on one, then by all means, he should get one. Under normal driving, the S isn't hard to drive at all IMO. If it will make him happy and give him enjoyment, then for sure. No better way to learn how to drive a RWD car than to actually drive a RWD car. I learned on a RWD and never had any problems at all.
I think he should be fine if hes not an idiot. Just tell him to be careful till he gets used to the car. Tell him to find a nice empty parking lot so he can learn the cars limitations and how to control it in the case of a spin.

Just make sure he gets an S with stability control. If I'm not mistaken he is not very experienced behind the wheel. That is a freakin recipe for disaster in a car as tail happy as this. All it takes is him letting his foot off the gas to fast around the corner and their goes the tail. I drove countless AP1's and pre VSA AP2's before I pulled the trigger on my S.

I think getting too comfortable on a FWD could actually be a bad thing anyway. For all intents and purposes, slow and easy driving will be the same between the two, but once he starts going crazy, the differences will come into play, and if he's too used to FWD, that could be a disadvantage.
