Good Drives Near Las Vegas?
 

Folks,

Me and a buddy will be in Las Vegas later this month, and I'm very interested in learning about your ideas and suggestions for good scenic driving trips in that area.

I remember watching a promo for the new Porsche GT that took place in a stunning desert setting -- lots of twisty roads and canyons. Now THAT would be ideal! :drive:

Nothing specific, but do take a drive out to Hoover Dam and venture out by Lake Mead.

Lake Mead is pay anymore (which is a good thing with all the break ins they had).

Red Rock Canyon is an excellent drive. Mount Charleston is a great drive, desert then complete climate change.

If you have a high profile car valet park at the hotels but tip well and have it curb parked out front.

If you're passing through Las Vegas, there are some awesome roads nw of Las Vegas (about 100 miles) when you cross into California. Follow 95 just past Beatty, turn onto 266 west. You'll drive through some amazing twisties (the kind where you can't really get going fast, but they're fun). Go past Oasis (you're in California) onto 168. Another amazing set of low-speed twisties (although watch out when you reach the part where the road turns into one lane for both directions). That dumps you onto 395. Depending on where you're headed, you can then go north and cut across Yosemite National Park (another amazing drive, although many other cars on the road).

Two years ago I was on a major road trip and tried going into Death Valley. We were planning on exitting Death Valley from the northern most road, but that turned out to be closed due to flooding and we were diverted back into Nevada via Scotty's Junction (another amazing road, although it's in a valley so the sightlines are horrible for spirited driving). It was cutting back over to 395 that we discovered the 266/168 road. One day I will return there and try it again. I've never seen roads that twisty before.

The part that I'll always remember from that road is the sign saying "Vehicles with more than 3 axles not recommended" (always a good sign of fun roads if you're driving an S), and the fact we passed an 18-wheeler going the other way. The road was so twisty, I have no idea how he physically was able to get past some of the twists. To me the roads simply didn't leave enough room!

I live in Las Vegas. I know of a few places that are fun to take the S. Let me know when your in town and maybe we can hook up or something.

The road on the west side of Lake Mead is wonderful in an S2000.

My first experience in an S was while i was in Vegas... Rented her and drove out to RRC..... Came home and bought one :D

I liked the drive to Mt. Charleston.
