Default Got a problem while pumping gas! HELP!?

First of all I'm not sure if this is where I suppose to post this topic.

I'm really new here so a little bit about me and my AP1.
Recently joined S2k community after a LONG wait.
03 Berlina Black
pretty much bone stock. I do have some plans for later, but for now I'm just going to enjoy this car as is.

Nice to join the forums, learned a lot here already.
Nice to "meet" you all.
P.S. SO_Cal

Now the problem:
I was pumping gas at my usual gas station.
The tank was pretty empty (last line on the cluster).
put the pump in, set the lock and wait.
the pump lock popped at 10.1 Gallon. So I pull the pump out then i notice some gas was right at the opening of the tank.
Then it started leaking out. A LOT!!!!!! I think at least half a pine!!!!!
At the time I didn't know what to do so I lock the cap back on and wipe off the gas left on the car.
I waited about ten min and tried to reopen the tank all the gas was gone. ( i guess it flow back in)

while I was waiting i remembered last time i filled up the pump locked at 8 Gallons, I didn't think much but the tank was only 2/3 way full.

Anyone else has ever had that problem? Any ideas of what to look for?
Gas Tank pressure?

Thanks

I've never had this happen to me. Was it really hot outside?

I have had mine do this once in over 3 years and 100k miles (thats alot of fill ups, yeesh). I've used the exact same pump before and after so I guess it was just a glitch in the matrix

Gas comes out of the ground at 60 or so degrees (this might vary a bit based on geography), then expands a bit as it warms to ambient temp. If you filled it right to the top of the neck, it is possible to overflow it via expansion. A petrochemical engineer could probably give us the exact expansion rate.

Happened to me once too. Just a bad pump sensor.

A shell station near me always does this on a certain pump. Not as bad as your occurrence but I always had a bit overflow out. Stopped using that station entirely after 3 times.
