In my region you can still find some excellent low-mile S2000s (some 2001s still in the showroom). The average price I saw was about $30k-$31k. My experience showed me that going through a private owner saves you quite a bit more and the car will likely have been broken in correctly. Having taken a dealer testdrive myself, I can say that low miles on a dealer lot are likely hard miles. All depends on the amount of care they take. I looked at one beautiful silver/red '01 with 400 miles on it for $31,500 and was very close to purchase. The one thing telling I discovered was that the dealer didn't even bother washing the car prior to my pre-arranged viewing. I reached under the car to check to see if the spacers had been removed and drew back a fistful of mud. I walked and found a much better deal (on a properly broken-in vehicle) by purchasing from an s2ki member. This BBS r00ls. :D Check out the marketplace and I think you'll find much better cars for less money than most dealers can offer.

I got my 01 for 28k w/ 6k miles. I bought it from a private seller. Just looked in autotrader (had to go across the country though). On a side note, my friend works at a toyota dealership and they got an '00 white one with 2k miles that they sold for 27,500 (they took it in at 27k I believe) or so, with used ones at dealers, it all depends on what they took in the vehicle for. I talked to his boss and he said he saw a yellow '01 go through the dealer auction for 23,000, which I would expect means the dealer would be willing to sell it for 24-5ish without too much trouble. The longer it sits, the more willing they are to sell it for close to what they paid for it. Also, everyone that worked there test drove it HARD. That directly led me to buy only from a private seller. It was definately worth the peace of mind to me. Good luck.:)

I gave $10k and an 01 Civic LX for my 00 S. It has 27k miles consumes no oil and is all ready broken in. Bought from a private party.

I mentioned these two a couple of days ago. Anyone care to do a Carfax on them?
'01 Spa VIN 0741 (this is an auction car) '00 Black/Red VIN 7744 (trade in car) Both are on the lot at Cleo Bay Honda, Killeen TX |
(Here's Stooxie yappin about CarMax again. I have no affiliation, I promise!)
CarMax always seems to have a bunch of S2000s, at least in DC. They are all around 3-7000 miles and between 28 and 30k, depending on miles, year, etc. One compelling reason to shop there is they offer a SEVEN year bumper-bumper warranty for $1000. I asked them if that covered the top, which might be considered a consumable item, and they said it did. Better yet, the warranty is transferrable. According to the Carmax folks, there are very few cars that they will warrant for such a long time. They offer an extended warranty on all their cars but the length of time is an indicator of how good they feel about the car. Most other cars there have 3-5 years extended warranty options. -Dan |
I paid 25,000 for MY2000 with 12k miles on it last saturday.
