Do you have a picture of what this looks like? This sounds like an interesting alternative to mounting it in the grill area. But if it is under the front lip, it is not good for me because I constantly scrape my front lip going up my driveway.

I'll never understand why everyone freaks out about putting a front plate on the car. It doesn't detract that much from the car; your car is still the same, just under the plate. I'd personally rather not risk a stupid ticket for the sake of leaving the plate off my car. As far as I'm concerned, its just one of those things you live with.
To answer the original question, I pulled the caps out with my fingers (I might have slipped a nail behind the cap, don't remember) and screwed the plate with a black bracket directly into the holes in the bumper. No problems whatsoever and IMO doesn't detract notably from the car. I prefer to mount the plates with the bracket (frame?) because otherwise they don't sit straight; they got kinda warped in the mail when I received them.
Again, I just see it as a fact of life when it comes to owning a great car. You expect to replace the SO-2's every 8k miles. You expect to check the oil every time you get gas. I guess I just expect to see a plate there. It honestly doesn't bother me at all. It's just a fact of life so to speak.
I just ran out in the rain and took some pictures of my S to show the front plate.
I think it looks much better in the grill than on the bumper. I zip tied the frame to the grill and then placed the plate in the frame. That way it covers the zip ties. I'm having problems with the photo album so I hope this works.
