Default Key cutting

Quick questions. Do I have to get the dealer to cut a new key? or can I just take it to any key cutter? any reason why it should be done by the dealer?

thanks!

Well, there's electronics in the key and the car won't start with just "any" key....

Since you have to buy the proper "coded" key from your dealer anyway, why not just have them cut it while you're in picking it up? Unless they don't cut keys and I'm doubtful that any dealer would lack this service.

Prepare for it to be expensive. I heard my parts dept. quote someone $35.00 do this. Not as cheap as $2.00 at the local hardware store.

I had to have a new key cut, the dealer charged me $23.00 for the key. I also had them change the ignition codes on 3 keys (someone at work stole my keys, long story), they didn't charge me for changing the codes.

The cost of changing all the codes doors included is approx $1000.00

Also if the dealer miss cuts the key they will replace it. If you by a key and have a key shop do it and they mess it up you have to buy another key

It's a JDM key so no code to worry about, only reason I'm not considering the dealer.

Did a search and not much on the JDM key except replacing the chip which I'm prepare to do. Just need to figure out whether dropping by Lock Smith is any better than Rip Dealer.

I got my JDM key cut at Sears. It's a definite risk if it doesn't work though!
