"Burning" oil in modern engines is not quite a correct statement. More than likely, what you have is evaporation of the base stock. All modern engines, including this one, run hot. There are SAE specs for what percentage is allowed. The European petroleum oils are better than US products in this regard; I don't know about the JDM's. Also in an engine this tight the only conceivable area you could lose oil would be the valve guides or stem seals. The breakin period does seem long. Race engines aren't "broken in" for 10000 miles and they have to make max power. If the machining was this tight, you'd sieze them all. It is important to vary the revs during breakin. A HIGH QUALITY synthetic will stop most wear, but 5000 miles of breakin sounds reasonable.

I did a proper break-in on my engine and now at 40,000 miles, it still uses oil. I check it every fortnight and top it up and it has had a full service history. Sometimes when I push it, I can see a cloud behind me!

Some owners swear that they don't burn oil, but they have very black exhaust tips! But then I know other owners who never use a drop and they VTEC it as much as me!

Doesn't type of oil matter too? I use Redline 10w-30 synthetic and oil level hasn't decreased after checking every 1000 miles since I've had car.

I asked this in another thread but doesn't buring oil leave a residue in the engine?

Its simple...
The S2000 has little oil droppers that add oil into the the motor.. besides picking it up from the pan...
Very few cars have this.. plus 9K of redline doesnt help the oil consumption problem either.

A bunch of words (despite the size or author) will not make this excessive consumption normal. There is obviously a problem with any engine that regularly consumes a quart of oil every 1000 miles. All you can do is stay on Honda for a fix.. failing that the options are slow the consumption with a heavier oil and make plans to sell this unit off. A rebuild could fix it but you don't want to fund that.

I disagree with the concept that such oil consumption is abnormal. I've had a zillion or so cars over the years (yeah, I'm an old fart) and oil consumption was evident in many of them. They were broken in properly and maintained properly but a quart every 1-2k miles was not unheard of. My '94 Prelude VTEC and '97 prelude SH both used oil at that rate. Is it a sign of wear or improper design? No, it's just the way tolerances stacked and how I drive.

My S doesn't use oil around town, even with high temps and VTEC but put it on the road for a trip at steady speeds and it does consume oil at probably about that rate. Doesn't make sense to me - seems that a steady high vacuum is causing the consumption but...

There isn't a manufacturer out there that wouldn't state that such consumption is in the normal range. Frankly, it strikes me that a little bit of an open tolerance that causes oil consumption may actually be a good performance thing (to my feeble brain). Tight tolerances would potentially cause extra friction and loss of power. Obviously, you can go too far in the opposite direction, too. I'll take the consumption on the theory that I get full power...

I have gone from 1 qt per 1000 to 1gt per 5k to 7k. It does seem to relate to rpm. That being said, I still hit 9k pretty often, yet it has decreased substantialy since 5k.
